Former Duke Duong Ngiep Trial Adjourned Due to Absence of Accused
Cambodia News, Phnom Penh: The Trial Chamber of the Phnom Penh Municipal Court this morning, August 30, 2022, decided to postpone the trial of the former three-star officer and oknha, Duong Ngiep, in the absence of the accused and the defense lawyer for the accused.
Mr. Sok Tith, Deputy Director of PJ Prison, reported to the court that the accused and his lawyer had applied for an adjournment, and therefore refused to appear in court at the present date.
Mr. Seng Heang, Deputy Prosecutor and Representative of the Prosecution in this case, stated during the hearing that the court had issued an order to the prison to bring the accused to appear in accordance with the procedure, but the custodians did not follow the order.
Therefore, in this case, the court decided to postpone the hearing to September 6, 2022, when the prison must bring the accused to court.
Duong Ngiep is being sued by Taiwanese nationals, CHIH YUEN and YAO CHING KING, in a case of alleged land fraud, document forgery and false bank checks.
It is alleged that in an attempt to resolve the land sale dispute with the Taiwanese, Mr. Duong Ngiep issued three checks in USD, with the number 145577 worth US$ 1,650,000, the number 213997 worth $ 3,655,000, and the number 132788 worth $2,000,000, (more than a total sum of US$7M), to the injured parties, who then took the checks to pay the bank, but the bank confirmed that there was no money in the account. Duong Ngiep was therefore sued by the plaintiffs and taken into custody.
To be continued.
