Modesty & Women's Clothing

Post by mythicalsophie1 »

Hi All,

Pleasure to have found you here - I am thinking about relocating to Phnom Penh towards the end of the year and I have done a small amount of research into modesty/clothing rules but I just wondered what you guys thought. Will my western clothing (vests/tank tops, shorts, skirts) be inappropriate? And what would you say is the essential capsule wardrobe for a young pale-skinned woman living in Cambodia?

Thanks :newbie:

I think a burqa will probably be your best option?

Women here tend to cover up when outside because of the climate. It's not wise to expose too much skin in the tropical sun. However indoors or in the evening none of the stuff you mentioned would be in any way remarkable.

The other wardrobe ensemble that is very popular is the pyjama set.

Possibly, you may not remember that travesty of late ‘70s to ‘80s fashion, the jumpsuit*. Once in a while, sportingly adopted by the likes of Charlie’s Angels actresses and others with an appropriate body type, but all too often worn by…ladies of a certain age, apparently 20years too late.

Well, in south East Asia, pyjamas has outlasted this. By a long margin. In fairness, it was borrowed by the west from Asia/Persia a few centuries ago, but the introduction of cartoon characters lends a certain Je ne sais quoi. It brings to mind Robin Williams’ Adrian Cronauer character’s discourse on the subject of accessorising the black version**. They’re for all occasions- noodle eating, shopping, rice eating, manicure/pedicure, high tea, breakfast, lunch or dinner, or the other meals in between.

*other popular recent western contributions to fashion being the skin tight leggings (the ones that celebrate the migration of the gluteus Maximus downwards towards mid thigh, while simultaneously advertising the poor choice in underwear colour), and the onesies (whose origins might also actually be traced back to western adoption of the pyjamas, but seem to be made of highly absorbent materials negating some peoples need for toilet training beyond 25years old)

**Are we able to single out black pyjamas, now? Or are there risks?

If you are from the UK then your usual Pot Noodle-stained leggings should be just fine in the Kingdom of Wonder?
