Hi,

I have a couple of questions for the UK Visa application for my girlfriend who is Cambodian. The UK Visa helpline will not tell me nor will the British Embassy in Phnom Penh!

I want to invite my girlfriend to England and the UK Visa application says 'Evidence of relationship'. Does anybody know what is required for this.

Also, do I need to supply evidence I am not in breach of UK immigration laws if I am a British citizen holding a British passport and if I do what?

If you are in a relationship and can prove you’re in a committed relationship (photos, other flights together etc) and you’ve not just met her online then I don’t see any issues.

If she comes via Calais she doesn't even need a passport never mind a visa

How long have you known this person? Have you taken many pictures? Any other evidence like both of your names on a rental contract.... Chats or emails between you. You make the evidence.

https://www.gov.uk/uk-family-visa/partner-spouse seems to give some info on evidence. Hopefully the income requirement won't be a problem but you should be aware of it

I imagine that when you have proved all what the UK wish to know and expect from you. then you have, or she has to satisfy the requirements (mainly your money) of what the Cambodian authorities expect. Both authorities will expect her to return home to her own country within a certain time frame.
Or you could go down the road of making the girl self-efficient (we're she doesn't rely on your support and finances) in travel by loading up her bank accounts.

Cambodian authorities have no interest if someone wants to go on holiday somewhere.

There are no restrictions or requirements imposed by Cambodian authorities that need to be met for Cambodian's leaving or returning to the country (apart from valid passport obviously)...not like the Philippines.

A friend of mine tried to get his girlfriend a visitor visa (up to 2 years) and made two applications. Both were unsuccessful.

AFAIK, the one and only issue is will they return. The UK authorities have no prejudices, it's all about the likelihood of their timely return home. The burden of proof is high and it's all on you.

The application costs are not cheap (£500 each in his case) and their refusals are couched in generic terms, offer no solutions to overcome that decision beyond statements like, "insufficient and/or inconsistent financial information supplied". Refusals are not subject to appeal. You have to start from scratch, re-apply and pay up again. He was over £1000 in the hole with no idea if he was close or not. He just wanted to phone the case officer and ask an honest question even if that meant being told he had zero chance. But you can't call anyone and get straight answers.

You might want to consider seeking the advice of a solicitor who specialises in immigration law, but be aware most of them will be specialists in asylum cases and other in-country people trying to avoid deportation or business/investor visas. Good old fashioned applications made out of the country don't attract legal aid payments.
