Internet blocking situation
Hey Everyone,
I am planning to go to Phnom Penh for at least 1 month starting in March. I'll be working remotely and so will need to connect to a work VP. Additionally, I also use a personal VPN at all times.
Can anyone comment on whether you can currently use VPNs today without issue? ProtonVPN, Mullvad, etc.
Furthermore, does anyone know if this new law would affect that? (the one referenced in this article https://www.nytimes.com/2022/01/15/busi ... ernet.html)
My work VPN goes directly to a work office, so no one else would be able to confirm that, but would suspect if I can use ProtonVPN then the work one should be fine.
Thanks

Re: Internet blocking situation
You will have no issues using a VPN in Cambodia.
As far as that article goes, they've been saying that for years, but it's still free and open, for the most part. They recently blocked a few well known porn sites though.

Yes VPN can be used without issue. They may theoretically block individual VPNs but in practice they are too many and even Cambodian officials need their porn so yea, rest easy !

Re: Internet blocking situation
Doesn’t China block FB, YT, Instagram, VOA (no bad thing), BBC, EBay (really!) etc?
Can’t see Cambodia getting that bad.
I’ve met a few paranoids who are obsessive about VPNs. “They are watching” etc. “Never use free, they’re FBI sites” etc.
ok, bit extreme but how does he pay for VPN, credit card, DOB, full address and probably phone number? Do VPN databases get hacked?

Theoretically you could signup for a VPN using a disposable email and pay for it with crypto currency which you have of course made impossible to trace.mannanman wrote: ↑Mon Jan 17, 2022 9:37 am Doesn’t China block FB, YT, Instagram, VOA (no bad thing), BBC, EBay (really!) etc?

I just use my own email and pay with CC or PayPal, not perfect but good enough for the innocent

You can mail some of them cash if you want to be extra careful.mannanman wrote: ↑Mon Jan 17, 2022 9:37 am Doesn’t China block FB, YT, Instagram, VOA (no bad thing), BBC, EBay (really!) etc?

Yes of course Crypto is an option but isn’t there murmurs that’s not as anonymous as touted?ItWasntMe wrote: ↑Mon Jan 17, 2022 9:46 amTheoretically you could signup for a VPN using a disposable email and pay for it with crypto currency which you have of course made impossible to trace.mannanman wrote: ↑Mon Jan 17, 2022 9:37 am Doesn’t China block FB, YT, Instagram, VOA (no bad thing), BBC, EBay (really!) etc?

I use “Free VPN”. Pretty good, after you watch some annoying gambling APP adverts.

I don't think you have to be paranoid to use a VPN in Cambodia.mannanman wrote: ↑Mon Jan 17, 2022 9:37 am Doesn’t China block FB, YT, Instagram, VOA (no bad thing), BBC, EBay (really!) etc?

First of all there's the Cambodian IP address you will be using while you're online without using a VPN. Most people you will deal with aren't confident about that. Using a VPN will provide you with a IP address in another country, for instance in your home country.
Second is email sent from the browser. By default it's fully accessible for anyone down the digital road. VPN will not only encrypt, but also pretend it's sent from the country you connect to with your VPN. The odds your e-mail will end up in someone's SPAM folder are much lower that way.
So besides privacy ,there's loads of practical reasons to to use a VPN when in Cambodia.
Re: Internet blocking situation
Depends, there are crypto currency designed to be anonymous but BTC for instance is not one of them. However, there are options for attaining crypto anonymously and if not there are tumblers.mannanman wrote: ↑Mon Jan 17, 2022 10:01 amYes of course Crypto is an option but isn’t there murmurs that’s not as anonymous as touted?ItWasntMe wrote: ↑Mon Jan 17, 2022 9:46 amTheoretically you could signup for a VPN using a disposable email and pay for it with crypto currency which you have of course made impossible to trace.mannanman wrote: ↑Mon Jan 17, 2022 9:37 am Doesn’t China block FB, YT, Instagram, VOA (no bad thing), BBC, EBay (really!) etc?

Imagine all of us putting our money in a bag, then all of us take our money back but in different notes and coins. That is essentially what tumblers do and with enough participants nobody knows what money came from whom.
