Craziest dish you've eaten in Cambodia?
Re: Craziest dish you've eaten in Cambodia?
Had it in Kampong Cham, with a Vietnamese guy who's lived in Cambodia nearly all his life. But dog isn't just for the Vietnamese, in the Northeast where I live it's a popular disk and you can readily buy it at the market.Darkcel wrote: ↑Tue Jan 11, 2022 3:57 pmYou had here? I only got to try this in HanoiKammekor wrote: ↑Tue Jan 11, 2022 2:56 pm Grilled dog leg with large red ants as a topping. The meat is surprisingly tender and the ants give it a bitter taste.
Not for the faint hearted though. For the faint of hearted... In some restaurants you can get a similar dish with the dog replaced with goat. Also tasty.
Dog isn't bad, sort of like venison so I can see how people like it

Hmm.. it would have to be Tarantula with a red ant tapenade, pretty weird but tasted not so bad. My body's violent reaction to ejecting it at record speed makes the occasion that more memorable!
I've tried dog once, and ashamed to say that I enjoyed it. It was gamey, dark meat with a nice twang to it. Not something I would go out looking to buy but I'd probably eat it again if offered.
Prahok has also grown on me, I can eat that by the pot with a few beers. It's been a while though since I've last had it!

Nothing too outandish
worst probably was eating lengths of half boiled and uncleaned pig intestines with my commune police neighbours late on the eve of one of their daughters wedding parties
Cicadas (I think) fried in garlic are a surprisingly tasty meal
Had cha cadeu made with a giant monitor lizard which was pretty good
And have eaten the hindquarter of one of those teeny tiny deer things that only grow to the size of a medium sized dog - that was bloody delicious grilled

Couscous.
Not a crazy dish, but i never heard of any couscous restaurant in PP, so i had to trace the ingredients and cook it myself.
It was crazy good, and i'm good at it (family sunday dish since before i was born).

Dog's head... yeah, the eyes were the highlight. Brain a bit bland.
I quite like the field mice that you get in the countryside.
Wasn't keen on the many skinned cats I saw hanging along the side of Road 6 one time.

Yes, the mice are amazing, however you need to know where they come from, because if they get them from the fields, they are full of pesticides. Same for the grasshoppers or other insects; make sure that they are farmed, not from a farm...
Driving on Cambodian roads is just like playing a classic arcade top scroller. The only difference is a force feedback controller, the limitation to only one life and the inability to restart, once Game Over

I thought my neighbors were out there eating chicken. I was wrong. I was a little grossed out when I realized I was chomping on a rat.
Those fertilized baby duck eggs grew on me too, not bad at all.
I also like those 'stuffed frogs' you can find.
And the alligator burger at LoneStar wasn't bad, though a bit rubbery.
