I didn't know I was so poor
I didn't know I was so poor
Talking to the locals who are happy to shovel cement for 6 hours a day for $10 I'm led to believe that they have other income and their monthly budget is $1500 a month, yes I know many can only get $300 if lucky but here in the province it's the norm so I'm told.
Now these people have cars live in wooden shacks in villages on dirt roads from what I'm told they have plenty of gold stacked away.
I'm questioning myself why am I pitting these poor fokes and giving them work I could do myself.
Anyway that's what I've been told by more than one, yet these same people won't help their neighbors who are very much in need.
Seems I've been given the bums rush with feeling sorry for Khmers and giving a fnck

Re: I didn't know I was so poor
It's a tricky subject. People operate in different ways than we may expect. There are plenty of ostentatious people around but not all are like that. I've known quite a few very wealthy people here who live very frugally and if you met them you would never know they weren't just ordinary folks. Many do hide their wealth, it's an old habit that comes from centuries of invasion and war. Some have made huge fortunes in property, land that was worth buttons 20 years ago is worth crazy money now. One eternally broke relative got quite a nice sum for part of her shabby old 50s house on Sothearous a few years back. She went straight out and bought a Lexus. The house still looked like a horror film set but she looked like the bee's knees. If a bee had really fat legs.

Re: I didn't know I was so poor
I can’t follow the thread of what you’re trying to say. The number of run-on sentences doesn’t help. Are you saying this person shouldn’t be doing a $10/day job because they have a second income? Or that they don’t prioritise their spending in a way that you approve of? Or that the Khmer are all secretly rich and just pretending to live in poverty?atst wrote: ↑Wed Jan 05, 2022 11:32 pm Talking to the locals who are happy to shovel cement for 6 hours a day for $10 I'm led to believe that they have other income and their monthly budget is $1500 a month, yes I know many can only get $300 if lucky but here in the province it's the norm so I'm told.

Gossiping is what people do when they don't use it's time for something more constructive, especially in the countryside, anywhere on earth.
Hence the money / stacked gold / whatever rumours.
And SE asia just looooove to gossip from what i heard....

If you were "rich"" would you still live in Cambodia?atst wrote: ↑Wed Jan 05, 2022 11:32 pm Talking to the locals who are happy to shovel cement for 6 hours a day for $10 I'm led to believe that they have other income and their monthly budget is $1500 a month, yes I know many can only get $300 if lucky but here in the province it's the norm so I'm told.

Re: I didn't know I was so poor
I was thinking of what was said, and would those neighbors who are very much in need, do the work that you are offering? Or, of course is it those who are doing the work that won't help the needy neighbours, because the neighbours are lazy and not wanting that type of work.truffledog wrote: ↑Thu Jan 06, 2022 4:53 amIf you were "rich"" would you still live in Cambodia?atst wrote: ↑Wed Jan 05, 2022 11:32 pm Talking to the locals who are happy to shovel cement for 6 hours a day for $10 I'm led to believe that they have other income and their monthly budget is $1500 a month, yes I know many can only get $300 if lucky but here in the province it's the norm so I'm told.

When you look at the pay scale that was made by government for factory workers, it's not a large amount to live on for a month, even less if they have kids. But they are most likely the kids of those needy neighbours, family being support supportive of each other.
How much is at stake for those casino workers, who are striking, what was their pay scales in comparison.
If you were "rich"" would you still live in Cambodia? Probably would still do, but if I was poorer than now, I don't think so.
Always "hope" but never "expect".
Re: I didn't know I was so poor
In my country there are plenty of people who have millions (of euros) on the bank, and they drive a old volkswagen. Or people dying and later the family finds under the mattress several hunderds of thousands of euros.
The most funny i ever knew was a guy who had a garage, when he washed his dirty greasy hands, he dried them after with paper-tissue-tork-style. And after, he but the paper tissue back away: because its not dirty only wet !! He died recently and had +2 million of belongings !!!
Its maybe just the way you earned your money that you want to show it or not !! ??

You should ask this to the people driving around in rolls Royce's, but to answer your question at what level do you call rich , but No I probably wouldn't I'd be living in completely different social environment.truffledog wrote: ↑Thu Jan 06, 2022 4:53 amIf you were "rich"" would you still live in Cambodia?atst wrote: ↑Wed Jan 05, 2022 11:32 pm Talking to the locals who are happy to shovel cement for 6 hours a day for $10 I'm led to believe that they have other income and their monthly budget is $1500 a month, yes I know many can only get $300 if lucky but here in the province it's the norm so I'm told.

What got me going last night was the pretending to be poor asking for money, take me to dentist, optometrist doctors I've no money,
I will be thinking very hard before I help someone here again.
Yes I felt good giving people in need a helping hand , but to later find out they are not needy , they have actually taken away from those that are.
When I go out to eat or a bar I don't expect my mate with more money than me to pay .
I'm standing up, so I must be straight.

Determining whether someone is poor or not is pretty hard. The person might own some land in some remote village worth a significant sum, while still being short on cash because of monthly payments to a bank or MFI to pay off the Honda Dream or the overpriced Camry.atst wrote: ↑Thu Jan 06, 2022 7:56 am

Support is generally not given to neighbors but to (older) family members.

Can someone explain the OP is simple terms? I've read it twice and honestly don't understand what it's about.
