anyone that lived thru it, remembers it.
RIP to the 8,000+ that died in Thailand, ( an over 224, 000 total) and prayers to the thousands that went missing, presumed dead
Just saw this
Hundreds gathered at Patong Beach earlier tonight to join the tsunami memorial service, remembering the lives lost in the disaster 17 years ago today (Dec 26).

It's not illegal to talk about it at all. Newspaper articles questioning Thailand's readiness for another tsunami and all. How many have forgotten, I do not know, but Phuket's population isn't THAT young and it happened only 17 years ago.John Bingham wrote: ↑Mon Dec 27, 2021 1:29 am Most people on Phuket have forgotten, many weren't even born when it happened and it's illegal to talk about it in public as it embarrasses the fascist junta.

Isn’t there an early warning system in place now?
People of the world, spice up your life.

The land-based loudspeaker system often fails 'cos locals steal the copper wire...
The offshore satellite buoys in the Indian Ocean have dodgy batteries....
I was at Nai Yang beach 17 years ago, still remember all the red sticks stuck into the sand where a body was found after the tsunami - those sticks stayed for one year until the government decided it wasn't good publicity for the area.
As the police volunteer in Nai Yang, I recall laying a wreath at the Khao Lak tsunami memorial in 2008.

The days that followed people were just walking around putting up posters with images of their friends they were looking for. I was traveling alone and had just arrived in the area so really did not know anyone but seemed like everybody else was missing someone.
The stories that were shared between strangers were nothing but terrible. And the stench after a couple of days with all the bodies frying in the sun, man you don't forget those things.
It's still weird to think about, I was incredibly lucky to make it out in one piece.
R.I.P. to the not so lucky on that beautiful morning in what we thought was paradise...

Experts say Thailand still not prepared for another tsunami, public unaware of danger
https://thethaiger.com/news/national/ex ... ZEnD4BhQLY17 years after the Boxing Day tsunami devastated Thailand’s south-west coast, the country remains unprepared for a repeat performance. That is the view of a number of public disaster experts, who warn that the general public is unaware of the risks posed by another tsunami. According to a Thai PBS World report, experts also say Thailand still doesn’t have an effective early warning system.
Dr Pennueng Wanichchai from the Ministry of Science, Research, and Innovations says another tsunami is a distinct possibility in his lifetime, given the huge build-up of energy underneath the Andaman Sea, which could be released by an earthquake and subsequent tsunami. He says he fears that people would not be evacuated in time given the lack of an effective plan that can be put into action at short notice. Thai PBS World reports that Pennueng fears people may not know what to do and could head home to their families, or to school to pick up children, instead of getting to higher ground immediately.
