The legacy of Cambodia’s ‘Golden Voice’
A team of artists has revived the story of one of the Kingdom’s most beloved musicians in a graphic novel
Sothea was among the most revered musicians in the Kingdom during the 1960s and 1970s and was granted the honorary title of ‘golden voice.’ Her popularity among a generation of Cambodians persists today.
Plans are underway to retell the story of Sothea’s rise to fame as a graphic novel titled, ‘The Golden Voice.’

“There is no demand for books in Cambodia. People only care about if they have food on the table and money in their pockets. They don’t have time to read,” Roeun said. “Publishers are right to be hesitant in printing anything, especially graphic novels, because it is risky.”

In a nation run by swine, all pigs are upward-mobile and the rest of us are fucked until we can put our acts together: not necessarily to win, but mainly to keep from losing completely. HST

Don't see any mentioning of Sin Sisamuth. He was the male golden voice of the same era. He and Ros Sereysothia was the most popular duet of the 60 and 70

Re: The legacy of Cambodia’s ‘Golden Voice’
"Ros Serey Sothea released a song called "The Traitor" that directly criticized Sihanouk, her former patron.
Sothea also directly participated in the Khmer Republic military; a film of her parachuting out of a plane during a paratrooper exercise is the only known video footage of her to have survived"
She was on the wrong side of history, imo
in a time when there was no right side, for sure
You can sure understand the aching soulfulness that is the particularly special feature of Cambodian music of this period.
