Day 3, about an hour left to play
new ball coming before stumps

England (2nd inns)
2/203 still trail by 75

Malan 72
Root 78
and cantering

Probably too late for this match, but we had probably written off any chance an England victory by last night anyway.

Still - an excellent day as far as i am concerned. (for Eng)
#1. Joe Root has shown how he can lead, steady, and stiffen his ship.

And we now have reassuring indications that we may have a competitive Ashes series.
'Early days. It's all about the long haul in these monumental contests.

England 297 all out, before lunch. From 223-2, the lost 8 wickets for the grand sum of 74 runs. Lost by 9 wickets.

I don't find this very reassuring.

We are all re-un-reassured again.

Depressing.

A shambles and a complete waste of all the work Root and Malan put in.

Looks like I picked the wrong day to go booze-free...

1/ The Ashes is a Test cricket series played between England and Australia. The term originated in a satirical obituary published in a British newspaper, The Sporting Times, immediately after Australia's 1882 victory at The Oval, its first Test win on English soil.
The obituary stated that English cricket had died, and "the body will be cremated and the ashes taken to Australia".

The mythical ashes immediately became associated with the 1882–83 series played in Australia, before which the English captain Ivo Bligh had vowed to "regain those ashes". The English media therefore dubbed the tour the quest to regain the Ashes.

so yeah PissOn, that part is a bit dumb.
So is standing out in the sun for 5 x 5 days over a mid-summer in Australia - or anywhere. full stop.

2/ But it is also the embodiment, the exemplar, the pinnacle, of the finest civilisation the world has ever know.

To England :beer3: - and all cricketers wearing white.
I’m happy to know that americans are not involved in this 🤬.
Let school kids kick balls around , time for men to work and stop playing

Pat Cummings out of the second test. Steve Smith (remember him? BOOOOOOOO) is captain for the match.

Pat Cummins sat on table in a restaurant next to another table and someone on that table has tested positive. Josh Hazelewood also out through injury.

Any Englishman thinking we have got this one in the bag, think again. England have played 4 Day/Night matches. They beat a frozen West Indies side in Birmingham. They have lost the other 3 in Ahmedabad, Auckland and... Adelaide.

Meanwhile, Australia have played 8 Day/Night tests and won the lot. All in Australia and 5 of those victories in.....Adelaide.

Very disappointing start to the series, if you are a fan of this format or an English supporter. Here's hoping that the Boxing Day Test produces a better contest.

BREAKING:
The English cricket team has to remain in their hotel awaiting results of COVID tests after one of the touring party's family members tested positive, according to England Cricket

Morning all. Not a particularly good one though, it must be said. At the moment it remains to be seen if or when we will see play today because the England cricket team remains stuck in their hotel rooms. A family member of one of the English players has tested positive to COVID, so the rest of the players and squad need to undergo tests and wait for results before any cricket can be played.

We've also heard that a member of the Channel 7 broadcast team has tested positive too, so their whole commentary team has been replaced for today also.

We don't know a whole lot yet, but every update will be in here when we get it.

BREAKING: England team given the all clear

Good news. The players have passed their lateral flow tests and are on their way to the MCG as we speak. Some members of the England coaching group are setting up some warm up drills and cones, so it looks like everything is going to be okay. For now.

BREAKING: COVID chaos at the MCG
