Chinese state media mocks Australia: 'How much left to lose?'
Re: Chinese state media mocks Australia: 'How much left to lose?'
Nearly two years after the United States launched a broad attack on Chinese tech giant Huawei, the campaign is starting to work. It's still, "Apple, Huawei.. it doesn't matter a flying flock who made it - i just want it!"
Huawei’s smartphone sales have collapsed outside of China, hurt by a U.S. export ban that prevents new Huawei phones from carrying the Google Play store or popular Android apps.
Huawei’s sales of telecommunications equipment in overseas markets also have suffered from a years-long U.S. campaign to persuade allied nations to abandon the gear over security concerns.
The U.S. effort has reduced Huawei’s global footprint and left it more reliant on the Chinese market, where much of its business is still growing, according to 2020 financial results the company released at its Shenzhen headquarters on Wednesday. Huawei’s sales in China grew 15 percent last year as revenue in many other markets, including Europe and North America, fell by double-digit percentages.
Last year was “a really tough year for Huawei,” a Huawei executive told U.S.-based journalists on Tuesday, speaking on the condition of anonymity because the official results had not yet been released. U.S. export controls have had “a huge impact to Huawei, especially for Huawei’s consumer business,” he said.
The company hasn’t seen any signs yet that the Biden administration will ease up on Huawei, the executive added, though he said it was early days.
Biden likely to remain tough on Chinese tech like Huawei, but with more help from allies
In Europe:
Countries that have either banned Huawei 5G network equipment or created obstacles for its use include Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Belgium, France and Estonia, according to Roslyn Layton, a telecom consultant in Denmark for Strand Consult who also publishes the website China Tech Threat.

It was network devices that were the main target- the phones are just collateral.
Numerous Chinese companies are pulling out of US stock markets.

I think Au got in first again, even before USA. (??) That was their first big "Back off" to China which stared the whole attitude switch on both sides.
The first of a few big internal security moves > then the much harder "national interest" tests for Chinese wanting to buy up Australian farmland and biz > then the big crackdown on spying inside Au's universities > lol, then going nuclear.
The Covid origins thing was just entertainment - putting in the boot for a bit of fun.

Re: Chinese state media mocks Australia: 'How much left to lose?'
This is a big shift. The Chinese have refused to allow any high level business or government meetings for the past two years. They won't even pick up the phone.
Top Australian and Chinese executives to meet for first talks in years
Top Chinese executives will meet with their Australian counterparts for the first time in years as business leaders attempt to find a way through a hostile diplomatic environment that has hit Australia with $20 billion in trade strikes.
The high-level private meeting between half-a-dozen Chinese representatives from state-owned energy and resources firms including Sinosteel, the China National Petroleum Corporation, Chinalco and their Australian counterparts in BHP, Fortescue and Rio Tinto on Monday is the first sign that Beijing has authorised its representatives to re-engage with major Australian firms.
The meeting, which could not take place without the imprimatur of the Chinese government, will focus on climate change mitigation strategies, one of the few areas where China has also been able to find common ground with the United States.
“Our ambitions are modest at this stage, but it would be good to think that a series of business conversations could pave the way towards a broader systemic resumption of high-level dialogues involving government.”
The Australian government has not been able to contact Chinese ministers for almost two years after various disputes over human rights, national security decisions, and business investment deals.

The Australia China Business Council will be pleased.
(lol. Remember when they were called the Australia China Friendship Society and they had all 17 of the security forces following them around wearing overcoats and dark sunglasses. Now they get an office in the Au Embassy in Beijing. )

This comes not long after Biden told Xi to lay off on Aus trade... Co-incidence?
