Chinese Man Appeals to Get Reduced Sentence for Drug Traffic

Cambodia News (Phnom Penh) On the morning of 23 November, 2021, the Phnom Penh Court of Appeal announced its verdict concerning a Chinese national charged for drug trafficking , reducing the prison sentence from 3 years and 6 months to 2 years, in connection with illegal possession and trafficking of drugs under Article 40 of the Law on Drug Control.

The 29 year old defendant, Mr. Zhang Feng, was arrested by police on 18 July 2020 in Sangkat Chey Chumneas, Daun Penh District, Phnom Penh for trafficking more than 3 grams of drugs with a false occupation. Four packages of drugs weighing a total of 3.31 grams were confiscated as evidence. The defendant was sentenced by the Phnom Penh Court of First Instance to 3 years and 6 months imprisonment. However, upon appeal his sentence has now been reduced to 2 years.

Trafficking 3g! That's personal for some of them isn't it. What's the false occupation refer to?

It's a tiny amount compared to the 100s of kilos that seem to be regularly detected.
What's the false occupation refer to?
Probably lying on an official document like his visa application.

I would have thought more fineable offences and heftier figures would be preferrable to the powers that be and cut down overcrowding. I know unofficial "fines" go on, but I would think 3g would be a donationable crime. Maybe falsifying documents is more serious than I think. Or maybe a lot of it gets made up as they go, on a case by case.
