If you were to ask an average Cambodian to name three Cambodian beers it’s quite likely that they’d say Anchor, Angkor and Cambodia – though perhaps not in that order – with an outside chance that they might throw you for a loop and name ABC Stout or Ganzberg instead.

For many years those brands and other similar offerings from their respective breweries were just about the only made-in-Cambodia beers available.

That’s no longer the case – though the introduction of local craft beers to the Kingdom has been such a gradual process over the years that these new micro-breweries and their mini-brands may have slipped right past your beverage radar.

To wit: Flowers Nanobrewery based out of Kampot province is brewing its own original craft beers – only available in Cambodia – under the watchful eye of Japanese founder and brewmaster Yuki Aotani.

Flowers Nanobrewery’s beers each have a distinct style and taste derived from the brewery’s unique use of local ingredients and they specialise in small-batch made to order custom beers tailored to each customer’s request.

Aotani was born and raised in Tokyo, Japan – but he studied and then worked in the US – living there for seven years before coming to Cambodia in 2015.

Flowers Nanobrewery’s custom beers can run the gamut of beer styles from American and British ales, porters and stouts to French Saison or Trappistesque Belgian ales to India pale ales and even wheat beers. Custom means custom and Aotani says he will try to give you whatever you request if he can manage it.

Great. Cloudy muck that taste like grass cuttings and $5 a go. I think I'll pass.

Does it come with a goatee and a man bun?

That's a prerequisite for living in Kampot these days.

The beer isn't bad, but for a long time they were very hit or miss. Same for quality control (lack of foam, etc). Haven't had one in ages though, I'm sure he's upped his game by now. More options are always welcome, though the market is already pretty saturated with imports and local brewers.

This is very bad timing. The government is about to enforce mandatory flow meters to gauge taxation on beers. Unfortunately these flow meters cost $80,000 each.
Cambodia's tax chief ordered brewery and beverage plant owners to comply with tax good governance principles, including transparency, firmly suggesting that they install modern flow meter systems.

The GDT has recently requested that all of the Kingdom’s breweries and soft drinks companies install such equipment to assist with the monitoring of production by local producers for tax collection purposes.

Silence, exile, and cunning.

For all the comical incompetence in this country, rumour has it that the GDT are well advised, trained and quite ruthless in pursuit of what they claim is owed.

Two takeaways from this article:

Heineken Cambodia managing director Samson Wong said he had received a letter of appreciation, bearing Prime Minister HE’s seal, that acknowledged the firm’s distinction as the “number one taxpayer in the country”.

I would love to see the top 100 taxpayers in the country.

Cambodia imported $17.89 million worth of beer, wine and spirits last year, down by 49.78 per cent from $35.61 million in 2019, according to data from the Ministry of Commerce.

That's quite a decline and shows the extent of losses caused by Covid-19.
