70 Overloaded Tuktuks Seized for Violating Traffic Rules
November 4, 2021
Daun Penh authorities seizes more than 70 tuk-tuks
The Daun Penh authorities implemented measures to reduce traffic accidents by seizing transportation tuk-tuks that were overfilled and educating the drivers.
More than 70 of these overcrowded tuk-tuks were taken by the authorities to reduce traffic accidents and damage to the vista of the area. The drivers and owners of the vehicles were taken to be educated on November 3 at the Daun Penh District Hall.
The Daun Penh District Administration Director, Chap Dina, said that under the guidance of the Daun Penh District Governor, Sok Penh Vuth, law enforcement officers seized the tuk-tuks. The operation was widespread and took place in all the streets of the district.
The Administration Director, said that the tuk-tuks were violating regulations. These tuk-tuks were transported steel, construction materials, and agricultural products. They stated that these tuk-tuks caused traffic accidents.
This is part of the measures taken to make the city more beautiful before the ASEAN Summit. The tuk-tuk drivers were instructed not to pass through the district.*

* CEO News: This seems to indicate that the ASEAN Summit is the real reason for this crackdown, and the over-loaded tuktuks will resume destroying the normal beauty of Phnom Penh traffic as usual once the summit is over.

In normal times, you'd assume too many over-weight tourists in the tuk-tuk
Remember watching many overloaded tuk-tuks struggling up the hill from the ferry pier in Snooky

If they were serious about wanting to reduce traffic accidents, they’d pull and educate all the Chinese and Khmer SUV drivers. Ah wait, unlike Tuck-tuk drivers, they might be connected.

You'd think they'd focus on overloaded trucks which literally turn the roads to shit every year and dump sand/dirt all over the place while they're at it.

Daun Penh Tuktuk Crackdown ?
All sub-standard tuk-tuks banned from Daun Penh
Post Staff | Publication date 07 November 2021 | 20:39 ICT
Authorities in Phnom Penh’s Daun Penh district have called on the public to stop using tuk-tuks that are not up to technical or safety standards or have illegal modifications to them in order to maintain public order and prevent accidents.
The district authorities reiterated the call after they went out to educate drivers and their passengers and impounded 72 tuk-tuks on November 3. The drivers were also made to sign letters promising to comply with the order before getting their tuk-tuks back.
Daun Penh district’s head of administration Chap Dina told The Post on November 5 that use of tuk-tuks that are not compliant with technical standards was taking place on a daily basis up until this operation, but on November 5 no more tuk-tuks were impounded as a result of the police’s actions two days before.
“People mostly understand the situation. They cooperate with us. We need to take actions like this on a regular basis to maintain public order similar to actions taken for parking enforcement. We do them in a series of stages,” he said.
He advised that the owners of the sub-standard tuk-tuks who are engaged in the transport of goods should switch to using vehicles like trucks or vans.
Additionally, he suggested that those who sell goods from tuk-tuks should go sell them in the suburbs because they will have more customers there and it will be easier to do business and to do so without having a negative impact on public order in the city’s centre.
“There is no penalty yet – we just impound the tuk-tuks and educate their owners. But if the same people make the same mistake in the future, there will be a penalty and the tuk-tuk will be kept at the district impound lot for two weeks, no exceptions. Any tuk-tuks that are not up to technical or safety standards are absolutely not allowed to travel in Daun Penh district,” he said.
Dina said that people should know by now that Daun Penh district is a tourist hot-spot that is important to the capital’s economy. Furthermore, he said they are proud to have received the Rumduol flower three times in the Clean City Competition in consecutive years and Daun Penh district has also been ranked among clean city districts by ASEAN.

I agree all touk touk should be able to withstand a SUV ploughing into them at high speed.
I'm standing up, so I must be straight.

Re: 70 Overloaded Tuktuks Seized for Violating Traffic Rules
Sounds like they're trying to make them go live elsewhere. Another move to "beautify" the area? Riverside area/DP increasingly looks like a shitty place to live. Bars and restaurants were closed for way longer than any other place, now tultuks being harassed. I mean fair enough, but what about all those shitty old Korean porter trucks billowing clouds of diesel smoke, no signals and all that? The authorities there seem like they're on a rampage, forgetting that whole riverside looks like a damn apocalyptic hobo town. Abandoned shops, people sleeping on the ground, trash everywhere...
