Gangs of Monkeys Run Amok in Thai Town after Lack of Tourists Cut their Food Supply (VIDEO)
'With fewer tourists visiting Lopburi, Thailand, during the coronavirus pandemic, macaque monkeys have started to scrounge for food and have even resorted to stealing. Locals say monkeys have mostly been eating sugar and putting their energy into their sex lives. There is a sterilization campaign to help combat the growing monkey population.'
There are 4,500 crab-eating macaques roaming the streets of this historic capital, many of whom are housed in the city's decaying Khmer-style Phra Prang Sam Yod — nicknamed Monkey Temple. The monkeys that aren't already snacking wait for visitors to buy fruit, seeds, peanuts, and — their favorite — sugary beverages from one of the vendors who line the parking lot, railway track, and adjacent roadways. The macaques aren't known for their patience. Some crawl up the visitors' bodies swiftly to take the goods and flee. Others quietly tear open the bags that dangle from visitors' hands, scattering seeds to the ground while their comrades rush in to claim their part of the loot.
