Accusations Fly After 17 Cows Die of Poisoning
Villagers Ask: Who Killed Our Cows ?
Cambodia News (Kompong Thom Province): In Sosous village, Sangkat Sroyov, Steung Sen city, 17 cows were killed after munching on poisoned grass at the Ta Ang dam during the Pchum Ben holidays.
According to the villagers, 6 to 7 years ago, the dam was a swampland where they could release their cows to munch on the grass and plants freely. After the dam was constructed by some rich and powerful people, the swampland was covered with water. However, the villagers have never protested about the invasion of the swampland. They just found ways to get the cows to continue to munch the grass around the dam for years after it was constructed.
However, on October 5, at 8:00 am, the villagers released the cows as usual, but that day, they saw 3 men spraying pesticides in that area, who ran away after being seen. The villagers found 17 of their cows dead that same day, which they reported to the authorities. After examination, the authorities determined that the cows died from unidentified chemical poisoning, not from a disease.
The villagers are prohibited from consuming or selling the dead cows.

Authorities investigate cow-poisoning in Kampong Thom
Chhun Sun Ly / Khmer Times
Nearly 20 cows in Stung Sen city, Kampong Thom province died on October 8, due to the use of pesticide on a rice field.
The owner of the rice field, identified as Ta Ang, denied that he used pesticide on his rice field, but authorities found many bottles of pesticide on his land.
Stung Sen city governor Mak Bunhong yesterday told Khmer Times that the owners of the 17 dead cows and the owner of the rice field are discussing compensation, but that half of the cow’s owners are not satisfied with the restitution offered.
He said “Authorities are facilitating negotiations between the cow owners and the rice field owner. Those who do not agree to the compensation may sue him in Kampong Provincial Court.”
