The Matao, the Guam Men’s National Team, is gearing up for its big soccer match against Cambodia Oct. 9 in Bahrain.

They play at 8:30 p.m. Oct. 9 Bahrain time (3:30 a.m. Oct. 10 Guam time) and again at 7 p.m. Oct. 12 Bahrain time (2 a.m. Oct. 13 Guam time) at the Khalifa Sports City Stadium in Manama, the Guam Football Association stated in a press release.

AFC Cambodia Qualifying Update : 10/10/2021
Image
Surprisingly, the 1-0 first-leg victory over Guam in the AFC Asian Cup 2023 Play-Offs in Bahrain, on the night of October 9, did not make Keisuke Honda, the Cambodian national team manager, very happy.
However, this was the first Cambodian victory in two years, since they beat Pakistan 2-1 in Doha in the preliminary World Cup qualifiers on June 11, 2019. Until their victory yesterday, Cambodia had not won a match for nine games in a row, losing seven and drawing two.

After dropping their first match Oct. 9 1-0 to Cambodia, the Matao, Guam men’s national team, is eager for their second shot in its final opportunity to advance to the AFC Asian Cup China 2023 Final Qualification Round slated for Oct. 12 in Bahrain.

Head coach Sang Hoon Kim said he was disappointed in the first match, but will be utilizing the next few days to assess and evaluate their performance.

“We had a few players make their debut for Guam in Saturday’s match and they immediately made an impact on the pitch,” he said. “I am happy with how the team is progressing overall. Now, it’s a matter of fully capitalizing on finishing opportunities we create, while maintaining high performance levels for the full 90 minutes."

‘We need to be wary of the whole team’, says Harimau Malaya coach ahead of Cambodia clash
Sunday, 05 Dec 2021 06:43 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 5 — The Harimau Malaya should not focus on individual threats, but rather the whole team in their opening Group B match against Cambodia at the 2020 Asean Football Federation (AFF) Cup Championship in Singapore, tomorrow, says head coach Tan Cheng Hoe.

He said in looking for the first three points in their campaign, the squad could not take the risk by simply marking prolific Cambodian striker Chan Vathanaka.

The 53-year-old coach said the most important thing to consider is the opponents’ ability to launch fast-paced attacks as a team.

“We can’t focus too much on one player alone, especially Chan (Vathanaka). We know that he has played in the Malaysia League before, but we also have to look at their younger players and their counterattack with the fast running.

“Again, we have to focus on our game for tomorrow, I feel like the most important is our players have to be very focused in the first game, and I’m sure the motivation and spirit are there,” he said during the team’s press conference held virtually today.

Vathanaka, who has plied his trade in the Malaysia League with Pahang and PKNS FC, had scored two goals against Malaysia in the 2016 AFF Cup group fixture, which ended with a 3-2 win for the national squad.

Meanwhile, Cheng Hoe said the main goal of the national squad against Cambodia was to get a positive outcome.

Therefore, he hoped that the national team could be fully focused to perform well despite having a short and challenging preparation phase following the Malaysia Cup competition which just ended.

The fixture between Cambodia and 2018-edition runners-up Malaysia is set to take place at the Bishan Stadium at 5.30 pm.

After their match against Cambodia, the Harimau Malaya will meet Laos on December 9, before facing Vietnam (December 12) and Indonesia (December 19). — Bernama

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 6 — Malaysia proved pundits right as they demolished Cambodia 3-1 in their opening Group B match of the 2020 Asean Football Federation (AFF) Cup at Bishan Stadium, Singapore this evening.

The Harimau Malaya squad dominated the match and earned the full three points as they fended off spirited counterattacks by Cambodia.

Malaysia, ranked 154th in the world, nearly took an early lead when Syafiq Ahmad headed in a freekick by Safawi Rasid in the second minute only to see it pass inches above the crossbar.

Malaysia’s win means that the 2010 champions managed to retain their undefeated record against Cambodia in the AFF Cup, having emerged victorious in all three of their meetings in the competition since 2000.

Meanwhile, in another Group B match tonight, Vietnam kicked off the defence of their title with a 2-0 win over Laos.

Indonesia kick off Suzuki Cup campaign with 4-2 win over Cambodia
10 Dec 2021 12:29AM (Updated: 10 Dec 2021 12:37AM)
Indonesia started their AFF Suzuki Cup 2020 campaign on the right foot by defeating Cambodia 4-2 in the second Group B match played at the Bishan Stadium in Singapore on Thursday (Dec 9).

Defender Rachmat Irianto emerged as the Indonesian hero by scoring two goals in the fourth and 33rd minutes, while skipper Evan Dimas and winger Ramai Rumakiek also found the net in the 17th and 54th minutes respectively.

Cambodia gave a commendable performance with their fast-paced game to score through a header by defender Yue Safy in the 37th minute and key striker Prak Mony Udom in the 60th minute.

Malaysia currently lead Group B with six points after their 4-0 win over Laos earlier on Thursday. They are followed by Indonesia who are ahead of Vietnam on goals scored. Cambodia and Laos are fourth and fifth respectively, with no points so far.
