Two Men Arrested for Stealing Optic Cables
Cambodia News (Phnom Penh): On September 12, the Toul Svay Prey police arrested 2 men out of a gang of 5 suspects for stealing the optic cables in front of a house #434 on Preah Sihanouk Blv., in village 8, Sangkat Toul Svay Prey 2, Khan Boeung Keng Korng.
The suspects used a Honda Scoopy and a Honda Wave to commit the crime. They were caught red-handed by the police, while 3 suspects escaped the scene. The seized evidence were 20m optic cables, 1 big pair of metal scissors, 1 knife, 1 pair of pliers, and a screwdriver.
The two suspects were detained at the Boeung Keng Korng police station for further questioning and investigation.

I might be wrong but I don't think there are any substantial amounts of metals or recyclable material in these fiber optic cables. I think they are mostly plastic casing and some synthetic used for the actual cables. Some of the local connections still have copper wires. If you go into the edges of the city, you will meet people who burn cables just for the blackened wire. The price for not burned wire is much higher but that would require actually slicing off the plastic.These guys thought a good length of fancy tech cable would be worth a fortune, because they cost that. Looks like that wasn't such a smart move.

Who would want to buy 20 meters of it? That stuff is for major installations, I bet they throw away 20m off-cuts.
