A simple 'knot-and-tuck' hack to reduce mask leakage (videos)

Post by Clutch Cargo »

OK, we've had topics on whether you do or don't wear a mask and how often.. :whip:

Now, did you know that mask leakage is a problem? Well, fear no more and read on coz the 'knot-and-tuck' hack will solve it :dm:

Firstly, the issue of mask leakage..

According to research (see 5.4 at https://masks4all.co/faqs-on-better-masks/), if you use a surgical mask, a 'hack' tying the ear loops and tucking in the corners to minimize gaps in the sides can improve your overall filtering efficiency by over 20 percentage points, or an improvement of about 50%. :Bravo:

I have an Oakley's MSK3 and although over priced, it's proven to be a great purchase. It has a rubber gasket that prevents leakage, prevents sun glasses from getting fogged up, has replaceable filters (both regular and N95 depending on whether you want complete safety or less restricted breathing), and a shape that keeps it off your mouth. If the money isn't a big deal to you then I highly recommend getting one.

Thanks, Bublé.
I recently started cycling again. Electric, but i give myself a good workout too.
After a lifetime of smoking my lungs need all the help they can get.
I use a mask with an exhalation valve when i am cycling (and not in other peoples face, because it protects me but not them). That definitely helps me to move enough air.
Never looked at these exercise masks before. Just scrolled thru some reviews just now, and they look pretty good for both pumping a lot of air, while staying firmly in place thru rugged conditions.
Reviews for different products vary, but Oakley generally score pretty high. Some noted the filters were a bit wobbly.

Interesting fact i learned just now...
Oakley's smallest filter (on the MSK3) is 3 microns. Covid particles are smaller than that.
HOWever, Covid particles, apparently, are almost always attached to larger particles like water or dust.
So they work well, regardless.

I run everyday now (keep in mind I now live in the Lake District, England, it'd be a waste not to get outside here) but I don't use it for that. While it's marketed for sports it's also a great everyday mask, and the thing about it not fogging up sunglasses (or normal glasses for those who wear them) is legit, it really works. It's also great just having a mask that only touches your face around the edges and doesn't physically touch your mouth.

May I ask where in the Lake District sir? I've never been but have enjoyed some literature from there, especially Wordsworth. Thanks to the internet I've managed to see some great photos of the place. It seems Windermere is the most touristy but Wastwater and Ullswater look quite serene with some incredible (mini :beer3: mountains)

A small village about half way between Kendal and Windermere and just over half an hour's drive from Ullswater (there's a beautiful place called Aira Force which is just a short way beyond Ullswater from here where we regularly go for family walks so we drive past it frequently and yes, Ullswater is serene.) Photo below is of my wife and son playing in Windermere lake on a warm summer's day.
