Cambodia to provide temporary refuge to 300 Afghan refugees: PM

Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Techo HE said on Saturday that the Southeast Asian nation will provide a temporary refuge to 300 Afghan refugees before they are granted asylum by a third country.

HE said the decision was made based on humanitarian principles following a request from The Asia Foundation, according to government-friendly Fresh News.

The prime minister agreed to accept a maximum of 300 Afghan refugees, providing them a visa on arrival and allowing them to use their identification cards for travel document, the Fresh News said.

However, they must strictly comply with anti-COVID-19 health measures including testing and quarantine when they arrive in Cambodia.

The length of stay has not been determined yet as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation is in talks with the Asia Foundation on it.

Article didn’t say that Iron Man was going to feed, clothe, and house them. Just give them visas.

So he’s looking for 300 Afghanis who carry at least $2000 in cash each, plus whatever Jewelery reserves they are wearing to survive the process?

Or will they all stay at the Cham mosques and beg?

Sad situation.

The phrasing of this makes it sound like you believe refugees only have themselves to blame for their situation. But I’m sure you couldn’t possibly have meant that.

I bet none will ever come here, and that's probably the governments target number too.

Gen Sopheak yesterday could not confirm when the 300 refugees would arrive in Cambodia as well as the length of their stay, saying Cambodia is still in talks with relevant parties.

I can't see many Afghans that have got into Pakistan wanting to come here and try to then apply for asylum to another country. They will already be in a safe country - Cambodia. They are already in one right now - Pakistan; a shithole I grant you, but a safe shithole.

They are asylum shopping (who can blame them?) and if they come here they could get stuck here; talk about drawing the short straw in the asylum stakes.

The last time Cambodia took refugees they wanted AU$40million in Aid*.

Yeah the Kh government took the low-ball $40 mill bribe from the Aussie raghead-hating advertising executive/immigration minister (now PM) because they knew less than 6 would come and no more than 1 would stay.
