Cambodia News (Phnom Penh): At 7:30 pm of August 23, 2021, a fire started in a poor residential area full of wooden shacks, in Toul Sangkae village, Sangkat Toul Sangkae 1, Khan Russey Keo, Phnom Penh.

The fire began from the burning of electric cables at the wooden house rented to Chan Samnang, a 41-year-old man who run the place as a junk collector house. The purpose of burning the cables was to savage the copper alloys, unfortunately, the fire became out of control and quickly spread, destroying 4 other houses with 12 families living there.

However, nobody got injured, and with the help of the firefighters, the fire was put out completely at 8:00 pm.

Another stupid everyday incident, but absolute tragedy for the families involved, who were not responsible, but who have now lost "everything". Looks like they are squatters, so will not get help from the official sources, or maybe a sack of rice to keep them going. Their neighbors look to be as poor as the victims, with not much to donate.
I hope there are local NGOs who step up for this kind of tragedy.* :o Sad to see people who have nothing, losing everything.

* If anyone knows the name of an NGO or association who would be helping these fire victims, please post.

When a dozen rooftop shacks across from me burned down a couple of years ago, the Cambodian Red Cross rocked up the next day and issued some food supplies and cash. Only the people from the one brick structure stayed on as everything else was burnt to the slab. All the other people disbanded.

They weren't squatters. They were renting shacks in the neighborhood when this doofus decided to burn off some cables. Scrap collectors usually do that on open ground/ empty lots and it makes some serious toxic black smoke. Some of these scrap collectors are just poverty stricken individuals but a lot are drug addicts and crazy fucking thieves too. 8)
