Junk Collecting Kid Disappears into Abandoned Casino
Cambodia News (Sihanoukville): On August 9, 2021, in village 4, Sangkat 4, Sihanoukville, a 14-year-old juvenile whose name is Poeung Veha, the oldest child of the 5 children of his family who collect junk for a living, disappeared into an abandoned casino at 4:00 pm and has not been seen since. There is also a large patch of industrial wasteland nearby.
According to the other junk collecter boys who were with him before his disappearance, they were salvaging through the junk in the abandoned casino, when all of a sudden, the security guard spotted them and chased them. So they were all separated as they ran off, and the other kids have not seen the victim again since then.
According to a woman who lives near the casino, she saw a boy leave the building at 5:00 pm and he sat outside, but then the guard chased him and the boy ran into the abandoned casino again and never came out. The boy's family and friends are all worried that something has happened to him.

Always start with the last person to have contact with a missing person. I'd have that security guard in the back of a truck ready to be taken for questioning the minute I arrived if it were up to me.
Hope they find him safe.

No surprise that it's a mess. They have been concreting over the wetlands, blocking the canals that were evacuating rainwater, building highrises on swamp lands etc. But the water has to go somewhere.John Bingham wrote: ↑Thu Aug 12, 2021 1:02 am Poor kid. Also, it's a sad state of affairs when gangs of kids are roaming around at night in derelict and often dangerous half-built constructions in order to swipe anything that is not concreted down.
I know that's not new, but seems to me that things are going backwards, not forwards. One day, the people who have invested in Sihanoukville may return and build a super-mega casino city, but meanwhile, the Cambodians who still live there are surviving as best they can. Many of them can't afford to move.

WTF pity the kid but he went to steal stuff in a building tried to hide in a lake outside the casino and drowned.
Why the already closed for covid casino loses it's license?

Re: Junk Collecting Kid Disappears into Abandoned Casino
Where does it say that he went there to steal stuff? And even if he did, how can you steal from a place that has already been abandoned? You can only 'steal' if the property belongs to someone else. If the building has clearly been abandoned, then the property inside it has also. So it's not technically stealing surely? And even if you could convince a judge that it was, when you have homeless children wandering around at night, effectively trying to make a tiny amount of money out of other people's litter so that they can buy something to eat, and they end up drowning in a lake after deciding to check out an abandoned building, who's really to blame? The kid or the wider society?
Tragic story that again, could have been easily avoided. I'd still have that security guard down the station for some hard questioning though. To what extent was he involved?
RIP to the kid.
