Could be. Alot of older roofing was covered with it.

Yes the age of the market building would certainly put it in the right timeframe where Asbestos roofing sheets were in widespread use. Luckily the wind is blowing away from us and we have agreed that maybe even going in the market building would be a bad idea.

Thing is those in charge must know about this but no education campaigns to protect people

Asbestos roof panels don't seem to pose much of a risk in my brief challenges with them. Cutting the panels and breathing in the dust is another issue. I suppose seepage could cause risk below but I don't see the danger. Does anyone know of more competent studies into this? Mine are simply cursory observations about uncut, undamaged asbestos not really being a concern.

Ya its the dust getting in your lungs that is the concern.

not checked ... too lazy.. but if memory serves me right asbestos sheets degrade over time and release a fine dust that settles. And of course, any handling of the sheets poses a risk. Cutting and breaking and throwing them off a roof into a pile is just reckless endangerment.

Yes can has we know cause serious harm to a person if the dust is breathed in when handling asbestos, although some of the old roofing sheets did contain a limited amount of asbestos being a fire retardant. But precortions should be taken and ones safety observed, also I would add the safety and wellbeing of other persons in the vicinity. Would be best if the guys had on a one piece suit, such has spray painters would wear, taping up on the wrist and ankle's, also a good mask and gloves. All to keep the dust from your skin. Even wetting the sheets will keep the dust at bay when removing, thing is to keep the sheets together and in one piece, taking time and care not to brake them.

As long as you don’t disturb them the risk is negligible I have a sprayfoam insulation company here in the UK right now,I’m always running into workshops and outbuildings with asbestos roofing and of course it must be removed by specialists.
Even prefabs or prefabricated buildings built after the war although much rarer these days were built using asbestos,it’s just the removal of them that is the dangerous bit?
Saying that I’ve met plenty of people that worked with it and came home every day literally covered in white dust, yet suffered no ill effects whatsoever but I guess they were the lucky ones?
If with a pure mind a person speaks or acts, happiness follows them like a never-departing shadow.

Approx 2000 australians die from asbestos related diseases every year - still - more than 3 decades after its use was banned.

From Bernie Banton (RIP), Australian Hero.

Asbestos was widely used in the Australian construction industry from the 1940s up until the late 1980s when its use in building materials was banned. Its awful legacy continues to pose a problem during maintenance, renovation and demolition.

Home renovating is now thought to be the biggest cause of exposure to asbestos fibre/dust in Australia.

Lack of awareness and ‘ignorance’ about the dangers of asbestos by trades persons and DIY renovators is placing many people at risk of exposure to asbestos fibres/dust, and to the very real possibility of being diagnosed with mesothelioma many years down the track.
Breathing in asbestos dust can be deadly and may kill you!

There is no known safe level of exposure to asbestos fibre/dust!

Think about this, in Australia more than two people per day, everyday of the year, are diagnosed (given a death sentence) with mesothelioma, and more then 2 people a day die from mesothelioma – all because at some time in their lives many years ago they were exposed to asbestos fibres/dust!

Asbestos disease… takes your breath away!
