KATHMANDU, JULY 8

A Nepali woman, who was allegedly sold off in Cambodia, has filed a report with the Human Trafficking Bureau demanding action against the traffickers.

A group of human traffickers, including Kisan Rai from Dhankuta has been accused of taking the woman to Cambodia where she was reportedly sold off on the pretext of providing her a construction job that would earn her Rs 100,000 per month, said police.

The woman was contacted through social networking site Facebook before she became the victim. Acting on a report filed by the victim, Rai has been arrested.

The victim paid Rs 450,000 to Rai on the pretext of taking her to Cambodia. Rai took the woman via the Kathmandu-Kakadbhitta route in Nepal and Assam-Nagaland-Manipur route in India from where she was taken on foot through Thailand to reach Cambodia, said police.

In Cambodia, the victim was sold off on the pretext that she had to cook and serve food to Chinese nationals, according to the police report filed by the victim.

"Investigation is under way," said SP Anurag Kumar Dwivedi.
