Is it worthwhile to invest in ESL teacher training?

Is it worthwhile to invest in ESL teacher training?

Many Cambodian families spend their hard-earned money to put their kids in private language schools for additional English lessons. So, teaching English is one of the popular jobs that an expat can take up to make a decent income. Teaching can be a rewarding or frustrating experience for those new to the profession. Some expats jump into the profession and then start switching schools regularly when they end up with noisy classes filled with students who misbehave. Time flies, so before taking the plunge, it is worth considering if you have an interest in the students’ learning in the first place.

Ever wondered if it is easy to teach English to a group of students in a class? It may be easy to teach when you have a good command of English, but to engage the students to learn well requires a lot more effort. Whether you’re a new or experienced teacher, it is worthwhile to take an accredited TESOL training program. Nowadays, more English language schools require applicants to be TESOL certified even if they are fluent in English. The world of education is often marred by questionable certification of academic courses. In order to differentiate between genuine, professional qualifications and those that are produced for commercial gain, it is essential to look for education companies that provide proper accredited certification.

A sound TESOL/TEFL training program equips you with the basic skills and theoretical knowledge needed to teach English. You will have a chance to practice teaching to your peers and participate in interactive group discussions. It will also give you the opportunity to network and develop valuable friendship with wonderful, like-minded people. There should be ample opportunities to observe experienced teachers and practice teaching in real classrooms to get first-hand exposure to different age groups and levels. It all starts with an interest in the students’ learning. If you’re interested to take up an accredited TESOL course, you may want to check out TESOL House at https://www.tesolhouse.edu.kh/.

Being white NES with 2 Mondays one Tuesday TEFL course doesnt make you language teacher. Countries who hire unqualified teachers like Thailand or Cambodia are at the bottom of the EF EPI.

To teach in the top 10 countries from the EF EPI you need at least university degree in English language. They hire their own citizens who speak at least 2 languages, and can explain subject matter in their mother tongue.

But in SE Asia education is business. Pay peanuts, you get monkeys.

Interesting that many SE Asian nations require a TESL certificate, while most East Asian nations only require a degree for entry level jobs.

Yes, it used to be highly respected. We still can, but we need to earn their respect.

Is 1200 decent for an expat? I honestly have no idea how teachers are even surviving on that, let alone saving for whatever next "adventure" they'll go on

Out of curiosity do you wish to share your what your occupation is in the KOW? and your monthly salary? So we can make a fair comparison based on how
a teacher can survive on $1200 per month? :unknown:

Some are currently getting paid less than this as they have forced salary cuts due to Covid. Anything from 15%-50% cuts. There was an old thread on here discussing it 6 months or so ago.

$2700 in Mondulkiri, assistant to an NGO director. Honestly, 2700 isn't much if you're eating out every meal in pp and counting most decent apartments being 800+ a month, gas for a raptor. It'll add up real quick.
