Ministry of Commerce urges Sweden to open IKEA in Cambodia

The Ministry of Commerce has urged Sweden to consider opening a renowned furniture megastore IKEA in Cambodia, as the demand for the market is significantly growing.

The request was by Minister of Commerce HE Pan Sorasak during the meeting with the Swedish ambassador to Cambodia HE Björn Häggmark.

HE Pan Sorasak said that Cambodia would like to see more Swedish investors enter Cambodia, especially those large firms such as IKEA and Volvo, as these two sectors have been growing rapidly in Cambodia.
In response, the Ambassador will consider this matter and also pledged to continue to strengthen the good tie between the two nations in sectors, especially trade.

According to the Ministry of Commerce, trade volume between Cambodia and Sweden in 2020 was US$64 million, while in the five-month period in 2021 the volume was recorded at US$23 million.

About as much chance of that happening as a McDonalds restaurant or Tesla dealership opening up I think...

They ll probably won't do it.

The main business of ikea is not furnitures but real estate, too risky for them , too many mall already with bad results.

Same for Mc Donalds.

Ikea said already in 2018 that in SEA Vietnam is their next target (I believe first shop soon to open, if not already open?) and they want to build few stores there before expanding more. Also they planned to build a huge storage hub to Vietnam that will handle all the logistics for whole the SEA. After that they want to expand to Laos, Cambodia and Myanmar. Though for these smaller markets they plan to build only small city center showrooms, instead of those traditional huge stores, but all the products would be available through their online store. They have trialed smaller showrooms in Singapore already.

So I do believe that within 5-8 years we will see Ikea showroom in Phnom Penh.

Or an uncle with a big piece of empty land just right for a long-term lease.

They urged Sweden, the country? Do they think of an IKEA as a Swedish embassy of sorts? While that's not an unreasonable view if it comes from a random peasant walking into an IKEA store, the government should know better.

IKEA, being the prolific tax avoiders that they are, aren't even headquartered in Sweden anymore.

I drove past a building undergoing restoration that had Tesla written on the side. I think it was along Russian Blvd somewhere but can't quite remember. I am sure Elon will be here as soon as quarantine rules are lifted
