This isn’t remotely near capitalism. Cronyism, absolutely under the guise of socialist communism, sure. It is the Cambodian People’s Party, after all.
What’s amazing is the ability to play both sides. Sell carbon credits for the forests, AND cut them down at the same time. Promote eco-tourism, and pave over everything in concrete. Blame poverty on the Khmer Rouge, and have a higher percentage of luxury vehicles and villas. Cozy up to the People’s Republic of China, and get more hand-outs from the western countries.

The first part is fair enough, but "socialist communism"? I don't think you know what that means.newkidontheblock wrote: ↑Mon Jun 21, 2021 2:39 am Cronyism, absolutely under the guise of socialist communism, sure. It is the Cambodian People’s Party, after all.

Communism is the ultimate expression of socialism.John Bingham wrote: The first part is fair enough, but "socialist communism"? I don't think you know what that means.
Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. Or advancing the great socialist cause (from a recent speech from President Xi).
The government must control all in order to achieve the workers paradise.
Therefore, the ones who control the government control all.

Had anyone seen the recent Khmer Times articles related to this? I mean, it was always clear that paper wasn't impartial, but their articles and so-called reporting are becoming increasingly farcical.

Cambodia charges environment activists with insulting the king
A court in Cambodia has charged three environmental activists with plotting against the government and insulting the king.
The members of the group Mother Nature were arrested after they documented waste run-off into Phnom Penh's Tonle Sap river.
Cambodia's law against insulting the king is relatively new and it is not clear how the activists have done so.
The three face between five and 10 years in prison.
https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-57563233The activists are Sun Ratha, 26, Ly Chandaravuth, 22, and Yim Leanghy, 32, all members of activist group Mother Nature.
They were detained on 16 June while documenting waste discharge into the Tonle Sap river near the royal palace, according to the Cambodian Center for Human Rights.
In a nation run by swine, all pigs are upward-mobile and the rest of us are fucked until we can put our acts together: not necessarily to win, but mainly to keep from losing completely. HST

An international human rights group has awarded individuals and organizations from six countries including a leading environmental group in Cambodia for their fearless defense of rights amid threats and violence.
Ireland-based Front Line Defenders announced the winners of 2021 Front Line Defenders Award for Human Rights Defenders at Risk through an online press conference on Nov. 24.
This year’s laureates are Mother Nature Cambodia, Sami and Sameeha Huraini from Palestine, Aminata Fabba from Sierra Leone, Aleh Hrableuski and Siarhei Drazdouski from Belarus, Mamadou Ba from Portugal and Camila Moradia from Brazil.
The group said it has honored human rights defenders tackling various issues such as racial justice, housing rights, minority rights, the protection and defense of the environment and land, self-determination and disability rights.
These groups have withstood various forms of harassment, intimidation, and threats, with some facing violence and some have been detained and charged, said Front Line Defenders.
“On the 20th anniversary of the establishment of Front Line Defenders, we are thrilled to present these six Award winners who are on the front lines of struggles for racial and environmental justice, equal rights and freedom,” said Front Line Defenders Executive Director, Andrew Anderson.
“Their courage and resilience are inspirational and demonstrate to all that another world is possible.”
Mother Nature Cambodia, a leading environmental movement in Cambodia, has been known for its relentless advocacy and campaigns locally and internationally for the preservation, promotion and protection of Cambodia's natural environment.
The movement, mostly led by young university students, monitors and challenges gross environmental violations and also raises awareness, educates and empowers people by providing them with training and financial support.
This year, three activists from the group were handed down 5-10 years in jail as the organization continued to a brave environmental campaign against a range of issues including pollution and illegal logging in protected areas.
