The reality is that they are clogging up an overloaded prison system here and the authorities want rid of them as they just don't have the budgets. When they are eventually deported they will be sent to be re-educated and to the Gulags and there is little chance they will ever be able to go abroad again. Unfortunately there are plenty more where they came from.
Cambodia has sought the cooperation of China to expedite the repatriation of its nationals arrested for various criminal offences in the Kingdom.
The request was made by the Ministry of Interior’s Immigration Department director-general, General Kieth Chantharith, following the overcrowding of arrested Chinese nationals at the eviction preparation office at the General Department of Immigration.
I don't see anything about deportation after serving a sentence. In fact, I can't recall reading a news item of the sentencing of a Chinese national for one of their VOIP extortion scams, kidnap and ransoms, or drug dealing. We hear all about arrests and they all the uniforms pose for the photos, and that's it. If anyone knows where such news reports can be found, feel free to correct and enlighten me.
My take on this story is it provides confirmation of what has been suspected, the rarely prosecute and imprison them here, they just deport them. Whatever happens to them back in China is not really the issue. Nations with the most friendly and close relations always prosecute each others citizens without hesitation. That does not appear to be the case here.
On a lighter note, I wonder who wrote this for General Kieth Chantharith? A world champion ass-licker.
“The bilateral relations and cooperation between both countries are positive and good and this can be further strengthened with the Chinese Immigration Department sharing their expertise on technical training and reciprocal exchanges under the framework of bilateral cooperation between the two nations,” he added.

Just do a search, there are plenty (although there should be way more).Doc67 wrote: ↑Sun Jun 20, 2021 12:56 pm I can't recall reading a news item of the sentencing of a Chinese national for one of their VOIP extortion scams, kidnap and ransoms, or drug dealing. Yeah like if some drunk chinese person in an suv dtagged your child 1km down a road you might want to know more than deported.
Re: Cambodian Immigration Requests Help to Deport Chinese Criminals
Can we sponsor a Chinese expat to deport? All proceeds can do directly into someone's pocket, I could care less.

This story is from a non news outlet and the story, in total, is a little thin on detail. Here's the story in full:John Bingham wrote: ↑Sun Jun 20, 2021 4:20 pmJust do a search, there are plenty (although there should be way more).Doc67 wrote: ↑Sun Jun 20, 2021 12:56 pm I can't recall reading a news item of the sentencing of a Chinese national for one of their VOIP extortion scams, kidnap and ransoms, or drug dealing. Fair enough JB, a conviction. Here is the corresponding story of his arrest and the background. This idiot went to the Duan Penh post office and tried to collect a package from Germany with heroin and ecstasy in it. Somewhere between 1.2kg or 16kg, the news report is the usual sloppy reporting.
This guy claimed he was set up and thought he was collecting coffee filters for a "Mr Apo" who of course could not be found. The prosecutor at the court said "he did not have proof to show that he was innocent" they upheld the charges and proceeded. NOTE WELL, in this country the burden of proof rests with the accused.

Anyway, despite the high probability of this guy being just a mug who was sent to collect the package, the 25-year-old tourist Liu Chunwa got sentenced to life.
This is level of the 'sting' operations here, just arrest the mug. They could easily put a tracker in the package and follow it to who it really belongs to, but that might lead to someone a bit too important. Much easier to keep it simple.

Arrested in 2011, and convicted in 2013. Yes, it is a conviction, but from 8 years ago?

This is from 2013. And they got 5 months for extortion.
The Phnom Penh Municipal Court on Monday convicted 17 Chinese nationals of international extortion ring, according to a verdict by presiding judge Y Thavrak.
The 17 convicts, including 16 men from China's Taiwan and one woman from the Chinese mainland, were arrested during a raid in Phnom Penh in mid-November last year.
"The court decided to sentence each of them to four years in jail, but required to spend only five months and 15 days in jail, with the rest being served on probation,

Charged, not convicted.
said that these 11 Chinese nationals were charged with”drug possession and trafficking”

Ditto, charged, not convicted
2 Chinese nationals face life sentence in Cambodia after massive drug bust

Here's a good example and what's really going on here. April 2019, Charged. This was for $3.5 million in cash from HK to PP. That's money laundering on an industrial scale.
A Cambodian court has charged three Chinese nationals with money laundering after the men were allegedly caught carrying more than $3.5 million without proper provenance for the money.
The three men were arrested this past week at Phnom Penh International Airport after they arrived from Hong Kong. They were allegedly carrying $3.52 million in $100 bank notes in their bags.
I did find the corresponding conviction for this lot, in July 2020 15 months after their arrest. They got 2 years. They will be out now. In the UK the starting point for this is about 8 years* and given the egregious nature of the offence you'd probably end up in a double digit sentence. God knows what a court in New York would dole out if you tried this at JFK.

Three Chinese nationals were jailed by the Phnom Penh Municipal Court on Monday for attempting to smuggle four teenage Cambodian girls to China, while the sentences of two Cambodians involved in the trafficking operation were reduced to time served. …

Yep not really any news on sentence and it does seem they are deported, how do they have a fare court hearing in china if that actually happens, if all the evidence is here.
It just smells fishy the whole thing when Chinese are involved.

How does one have a fair court hearing in the People’s Republic of China? There is no trial by jury. No Miranda rights. No due process clauses. Verdict handed down by judges only.

That's all true. It would be interestingly to know how harshly they are dealt with but I don't suppose that information will be forthcoming anytime soon.newkidontheblock wrote: ↑Mon Jun 21, 2021 9:12 am How does one have a fair court hearing in the People’s Republic of China?
