Old pictures of Cambodia tagged: 'Share for the next generation'

Have questions or resources regarding Khmer Culture? This forum is all about the Kingdom of Cambodia's culture. Khmer language, Cambodian weddings, French influence, Cambodian architecture, Cambodian politics, Khmer customs, etc? This is the place. Living in Cambodia can cause you to experience a whole new level of culture shock, so feel free to talk about all things related to the Khmer people, and their traditions. And if you want something in Khmer script translated into English, you will probably find what you need.

Old pictures of Cambodia tagged: 'Share for the next generation'

Post by Clutch Cargo »

I came across a FB post shared by my khmer friend titled 'Share for the next generation' with pics of earlier times..dates unknown.

I searched here to see if anyone has already posted them before but could not find..apologies if otherwise.

There are 60 odd in total so I thought I'd post maybe 6 at a time so that can perhaps generate discussion around what they represent and the timing rather than just dumping them all at once. They are in no particular order.

Anyway, here goes:

The second one, looking down 102 past the Post Office, looks like it's mid 50s-late 60s going by the cars, I'd be interested in what type of armored car that is. I'd guess all the other pictures are early 90s. On the train one you can see the loaded up carriages they used to push in front in case the track was mined - I don't think you even had to pay to travel on these. Great pictures, I've never seen any of them before.

Why the scarf? Everyone behind the soldier (?) looks dressed for summer, but he's got his winter clothes on.

That is a krama (ក្រមា) which has a multitude of uses. In 2021 it could be a covid mask. Has nothing to do with winter.

I really wonder about that old classic house in pic #6. Imagine what it would've been in it's heyday.. Colonial style I gather...there's an associated FB comment that says:
This house is still in Chbar Ompov, fresh bamboo village near my house.

I believe this house is more Chinese Merchant style, but I've also seen many similar one around pagodas.

Those other pictures are fantastic, I had a beeper like that in about 1994.
