Re: Family of Six Dead in Kampong Chhnang House Fire
UPDATE: The fire was no accident, it was murder.
Breaking news sent from CPU:
TASK FORCE “ECHO21” Arrest and Charge Father with 5 counts of Murder.
The CPU Homicide Investigation Team, Forensic Services Team in co-operation with the Ministry of Interior Forensic Department, Kompong Chhnang Police Command, and Kompong Chhnang Criminal Investigation and Forensic Departments have today charged NUN SARETH with 5 counts of Murder associated with the house fire that occurred in Kompong Chhnang on the evening of the 9th of May 2021.
NUN SARETH was the 38-year-old father and husband of the 5 family members who perished in the fire and will be presented to the Kompong Chhnang Court of First Instance for arraignment on the 5 murder charges.
The Task Force members worked tirelessly over the past 3 days collecting all available evidence and consulting both Forensic Pathologists and Arson and Explosive experts in Australia to gather the best possible evidence to support the charges.
“It was clear from the initial forensic examination of both the deceased and crime scene that something very wrong had occurred at the premises and the defendants account of how the fire started and what happened simply did not make sense,” said James McCabe the Director of Operations of the CPU who led the CPU response.
“This is a heinous case that has affected us all, the loss of so many young lives. I want to thank everyone involved in this investigation, it was only through the dedication and commitment of all the investigators and forensic experts that we were able to gather sufficient evidence to ensure this individual was prosecuted for this heinous crime. I also want to thank the Australian experts that assisted in reviewing and supporting the findings,” continues James McCabe.
“Great work by Kompong Chhnang Police Command and the Ministry of Interior to ensure these children and their mother got some justice.”The offender has been interviewed over the crime which has overwhelming evidence to support a conviction against him. Our sincere condolences to the relatives of the victims, may they rest in peace.

Motive: The suspect said that he killed his pregnant wife and his young children, aged 3 to 9 years old, because he was jealous of his wife.

They then questioned Sareth using psychological methods. After three days of interrogation, the suspect confessed that he had caused the fire.
“According to the husband’s answers, the fire was not caused by an electrical malfunction or gas explosion while cooking. It was a premeditated murder. He was jealous of his wife and that led to violence, setting fire to the house, and killing his wife and four children,” Vuthy said.

UPDATE: Guilty verdict; husband faces life sentence in horrifying murder case.
8 mins ago - BREAKING NEWS
Guilty verdict on man who killed wife and 4 children in “brutal” murder blaze
A Kampong Chhnang man who killed his wife and 4 children in deliberate acts of murder and arson has been convicted of murder and faces life imprisonment in jail.
Non Sareth, 28, was convicted today by Kampong Chhnang Provincial Court of a charge of premeditated murder of 5 victims and concealing evidence on May 9th, 2021
It appears that authorities initially did not suspect murder and instead believed that Non Sareth was the only survivor of a terrible accident.
It was not until an autopsy revealed that some of the victims had died of wounds from a bladed object – believed to be scissors – rather than from smoke inhalation, that police began to question Non Sareth closely. Under close interrogation, Non Sareth broke down and confessed to the murder of his family.
Cambodia’s Child Protection Unit (CPU), which was heavily involved in the prosecution of the case has described the act as “more brutal then anyone could imagine”
In a post on social media, CPU gave a synopsis of the events that lead to this horrendous murder, saying that at 8 pm, May 09, 2021, the perpetrator had a serious conflict with his 38-year-old wife at their home in Kon Rong Commune, Bori district.
The criminal then attacked his wife with scissors, causing her to sustain severe injuries in the chest. He then proceeded to attack his 3 year old son and then strangled his 9 year old stepson. Meanwhile, the criminal’s 7 year old twins hid, terrified, from the onslaught in a bedroom.
The criminal then burned mattresses and clothes to start the fire. He waited in the house until the fire was consuming the house, knowing that the twins were still alive and locked in the bedroom.
When the fire burned the house down completely, the criminal left and waited until neighbours found the grisly scene.

No, not since 1989 in law. There's more to this story, it involves ancient artifacts and suchlike.
Silence, exile, and cunning.

Re: Family of Six Dead in Kampong Chhnang House Fire (UPDATE: Murder Most Foul)
What is said in the Khmer media is that the couple had found an "artefact", and that the husband wanted to sell it, and his wife disagreed.
Because he was mad with his wife about not getting the potential money for the said artefact, the man killed his whole family, his pregnant wife and their four children, and then he burned the house down to destroy the evidence. Tragic.
