Family of Six Dead in Kampong Chhnang House Fire (UPDATE: Murder Most Foul)

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

He looks like he's still thinking about that artefact.

Unless I'm missing something it doesn't look like fine work and is likely worth very little. More Kathmandu 1975 than Khmer Empire 1300 or whatever. Half the fucking thing is so corroded it's gone smooth.
Silence, exile, and cunning.

The item is corroded because when the man set fire to the house, he forgot to take his precious belonging with him. But it was the first thing he looked for when he returned to the burnt-out house, according to the KT:
Even more interesting from the incident is that an artefact of a diety’s leg weighing more than 1.6 kilogrammes made of metal, copper, iron and brass was found among the charred bodies and debris.

Kampong Chhnang culture and fine arts department director Sok Thuok said the artefact has been given to them yesterday for safe keeping.

He added the artefact was built in the post-Angkorian style after the 18th century and it has cultural history value.

Relating the story of the artefact, he said, that Sareth had found the deity’s leg in a field where he was removing rubbles to build a house.
An said Sareth decided to keep his find which he used when he turned a fortune teller and started treating people for some diseases.

“Someone offered him a substantial amount of money for the artefact and Sareth was interested to sell to pay off his microfinance debt which was more than $20,000. But, his wife refused to sell and this became a long-standing argument between them,” he added.
On May 10 morning when Sareth returned to the site where the charred bodies laid, An said, Sareth was seen looking for the artefact.

This is what I was talking about in a post a long time ago.

That artefact is made of a material that Khmer believe to be something called "samrut" which translates to "bronze" but it is considered an almost magical material and MOST Khmer people, even well educated ones, strongly believe to exist and that it is worth much more than it's weight in gold.
It is actually a long running elaborate scam but so many belive in it that it.
