The Covid deniers out there and how to handle them.
Re: The Covid deniers out there and how to handle them.
I don't think people deni covid it's the governments tuff response and actions that confuse people when they compare the government response is no where as tuff to other things that harm or kill.
When people look at those differences they start looking for a reason and conspiracy is the conclusion
. example: why are governments still allowing manufacturing of cars to go on thier roads that can do more than the speed limits.

I hear this a lot. There's no dead people in the streets. That's because what governments are doing is preventing that. Maybe not in india. But india is a media invention. I've never seen it. Just some preemptive denialKammekor wrote: ↑Sat May 01, 2021 8:46 am Let's be honest, Covid has been pretty much invisible for most people. For me, I know two people who've had covid, both not living in Cambodia. They became ill and recovered. That's my experience with covid in 14 months time.
But I do see the measures taken, and when I make the comparison without giving it much more thought I see a world in lock down while only two people I know have been ill and they both recovered.
I think that's an important reason people deny covid.

This is a bit of a strawman argument as very few deny the existence of Covid. What is far more common is disagreement over the actions needed to combat it. Those that favor increased action to prevent the spread tend to exaggerate the effects while those that are opposed tend to minimize. It seems to me that Covid is neither just a cold nor the black death set to wipe out a third of the world's population. In order to be persuasive in an argument it seems like choosing one or the other is a common tactic however.
There is a rather one sided view being given by the media though. If it bleeds it leads which gives a distorted view of the facts. Couple that with a natural tendency for people to overestimate risks that are heavily publicized (like the risk of dying in an airplane crash vs car crash) the overall perception of the risks of Covid are vastly overestimated.

Poor understanding leads to poor policy. That so many are so meaningfully misinformed is troubling. From the data in the article posted it would seem that the average "Covid denier" has a more accurate perception of the risks of Covid than the general public.

A lot of it probably depends on where you're living. Where I'm from we were told that, based on what we'd seen in China and Italy there was no way our hospital system could cope with X percent of our at risk population getting sick so it was very important to flatten the curve so that those who did get sick could be looked after. Not long after that the government said they wanted to go hard for four weeks with a strict lockdown and try to eliminate the virus from the country because a short term lockdown was going to hurt less than having the virus in the community long term and probably never being able to get rid of it. This apparantly made sense to most people and pretty much everyone got behind it.johnnywalker3 wrote: ↑Sat May 01, 2021 10:58 am This is a bit of a strawman argument as very few deny the existence of Covid. From what I understand other places told everyone that the chances of 'you personally' dying were pretty remote so just accept the risk the same way you'd accept the chance of dying in a car crash or whatever and you won't need to close your business for a month. I understand that rationale too but I can't help thinking this bullshit should have been over a long time ago but it's not because we (humanity in general) chose to ignore the problem when there was still a chance to stop it.

Covid deniers? How to handle them?
Just start handing these out free of charge.

You can’t blame people to be “Covid sceptic” when their own government, politics and some doctors are deniers.

Not met many deniers, plenty of skeptics of regional handling of the issue though. There is a pandemic but, as importantly, there's also an infodemic taking place
I imagine that both deniers and those who spend most of their energy decrying deniers would be very similar groups of people with not much else to occupy themselves in their day to day lives

There's no point in trying to reason with Covid deniers/sceptics/antivaxxers. If they listened to reason, they would be more inclined to trust science, immunologists, etc. It's just a waste of your time and energy.Jerry Atrick wrote: ↑Sat May 01, 2021 12:51 pm Not met many deniers, plenty of skeptics of regional handling of the issue though.
