Post by CEOCambodiaNews »

From CEO News: In the present situation, which is evolving very fast, a lot of expats are looking to find out what is happening on the Covid front from day to day and hour to hour. Because of this, and the fact that the main Cambodia Covid thread has become cumbersome and off topic, we are now going to attempt to run a thread with ONLY news on the ground for people living in Cambodia. So please help by not posting general Covid news or your opinions on lockdowns or vaccines on this thread. Please use the other Covid threads for this.
We realize that this is a discussion forum, but there is a need for a go-to thread for information on what's happening in the moment.
Feel free to post your real experiences, and then say so, or otherwise post some sort of source for your post.

Here are some of tonight's news items from the Khmer Times that might be important for CEO readers:

All state markets and unregulated markets in Phnom Penh are to be closed for 14 days

Phnom Penh Municipality has just announced tonight that it will close all “state-run and unregulated market” all over the capital for 14 days.
This late sudden directive was announced as yet another sudden move by the authorities to curb the coronavirus in Cambodia and the markets have a big source of community infections.

It also requires all the vendors and security guards in the markets which have operated since April 14 to come to the nearest testing sites to have their sample taken to be tested for the coronavirus. After that, they will have to quarantine themselves for another 14 days.

The authorities in all 14 districts in Phnom Penh shall be responsible for this task while the people who violate the orders shall face legal action.

Some of the big and popular markets have had had hundreds of vendors, security, officials and patrons tested positive for COVID-19 and have already been shut.

Tonight’s decision means all remaining markets have to be closed and by morning, the authorities are going to face a nightmarish situation of people having no markets open to get their fresh food and meat supplies due to the mandatory shutdown and testing, as ordered by the Phnom Penh authority.

Glad I saw this, my wife just jumped on the moto and headed to the grocery store (we live outside Siem Reap). Told her to buy 3 kilos of meat and some pasta - if nothing else we'll eat spaghetti for a few weeks. Hopefully this doesn't spread beyond PP but wouldn't be surprised to seem to duplicate the effort.

At least six apartment buildings and Borey Duong Chan in Poipet City, Banteay Meanchey Province were closed by the authorities after finding an Indonesian national who was tested positive for Covid-19 on the night of April 22, 2021. The closure was made to prevent the spread of Covid-19.

The Indonesian man was staying at Borey Duong Chan, House 134B, in Samaki Meanchey Village, Sangkat / Poipet City. Three locations were immediately locked down overnight. Two other locations involve apartment buildings in the village-Sangkat Poipet.

Keat Hul, the mayor, said: “After receiving information from a team of doctors who took samples from the Indonesian men and was tested positive, the police immediately closed all three locations. “Over the night, without allowing entry and exit to find those, both directly and indirectly involved with the patient, to prevent the spread of the virus to larger communities. “

The government has lifted the travel ban and reopened shuttered tourism resorts throughout the country except for the locked-down Phnom Penh and Kandal province designated as “Red Zone”.
The government imposed a 14-day ban on travel between provinces on April 6 in a bid to stem the spread of COVID-19.

In the statement issued today, Prime Minister HE said the interprovincial travel ban came into effect on April 6 and 17 and that now people can travel from one province to another.
However, Mr HE said that the entry and exit of locked-down areas, especially Phnom Penh and Kandal province’s Takhmao City are still banned.

Inter-provincial Travel Ban Lifted Despite Surging COVID-19 Cases
Cambodia on April 25 recorded 616 new cases of COVID-19, all linked to the February 20 community event, according to the Ministry of Health.

Sao Phal Niseiy 25/04/2021 5:33 PM

With 6,495 active cases in Cambodia, Prime Minister HE has removed restrictions on travelling between provinces as private healthcare facilities get the go ahead to treat COVID-19 patients.

PHNOM PENH--Cambodia on April 25 recorded 616 new cases of COVID-19, all linked to the February 20 community event, according to the Ministry of Health.
Again, Phnom Penh was the worst affected where 546 new cases were found. Kandal Province reported 24 new cases while in Preah Sihnanouk Province an additional 20 cases were identified.

A further eight cases were found in Prey Veng Province along with seven cases in Takeo Province.

Koh Kong, Kampong Thom, Kampong Chhnang, Mondulkiri and Svay Rieng provinces all reported two cases each. Kampong Speu Province also reported one case, but the 65-year-old woman involved passed away on April 24.

In the meantime, 190 patients made a recovery and have been discharged from hospital.

Cambodia now has 6,495 active cases and the total number of reported infections stands at 9,975. The Health Ministry said that 3,400 people have recovered and 74 people have lost their lives to COVID-19.

Despite this, on April 25 Prime Minister HE announced that the ban on travel between provinces has been lifted and that tourism sites and resorts can reopen with immediate effect.

According to the decision, the removal of restrictions doesn’t apply to places under lockdown including Phnom Penh and Takhmao.

The government imposed the 14-day travel ban from April 7 to April 20, but later extended it to April 28 in order to curb the spread of the virus.

Meanwhile, as hospital beds run short in Phnom Penh, Health Minister Mam Bunheng has decided to allow private hospitals to treat COVID-19 patients in the capital. The decision, he said in a press statement, was made in order to help relieve the burden on public hospitals, which have been overwhelmed by the rise in cases.

Private healthcare facilities will require permission from the Ministry of Health and will have to adhere to conditions set by the ministry, but the statement was unclear whether COVID-19 patients will have to pay for treatment.

Or Vandine, spokesperson for the Health Ministry, confirmed that patients will have to pay for treatment at private hospitals.

This comes just days after the ministry approved the use of rapid testing kits officially known as Rapid Agent Test COVID-19 to be carried out by private hospitals across the country on April 22.

The Phnom Penh Municipal Administration has also revised its compulsory Covid-19 testing requirement for all residents in the red zones – where residents are forbidden from leaving their homes – just one day after its earlier announcement which mandated testing for everyone and raised the threat of legal actions against anyone who failed to comply.

According to the new instructions released on April 24, now only those who have had contact with infected patients or are living in high-risk areas have to be tested.

“Testing in the red zone is now required for those who have had direct and indirect contact with Covid-19 patients, those who live the areas with a high number of positive cases, those who have temperatures, a cough, sneezing, difficulty breathing or anyone else who thinks that they may have contracted the virus,” municipal governor Khuong Sreng said in the new directive.
