Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

Doctors and director of Banteay Meanchey Provincial Health Department allegedly violate the Covid-19 ban in Banteay Meanchey
Image
Cambodia News, (Banteay Meanchey): Reports say that leaked photos on social media show Mr. Le Chansangvat, Director of Banteay Meanchey Provincial Health Department, and his team, allegedly drinking, singing and having fun with each other at their place of work on April 14, 2021.
Image
Sources from the Banteay Meanchey provincial health official, who asked not to be named, said that those who drank alcohol with Mr. Le Chan Sangvat were the Tai Kong Volunteer Medical Team and the head of the AIDS program of the Banteay Meanchey Provincial Health Department.

Regarding this kind of leaked information, our press can not ask you to comment yet. [CEO News: Reminder that the source of this information is a post on social media and remains unconfirmed.]
However, in relation to the case of violating the ban on measures to prevent Covid-19, comments on social media requested the relevant ministry to take legal action against the perpetrator immediately so that the law would have equal value and transparency for everyone. Otherwise, the value of other bans will no longer be respected.

All ways round, its excellent news for Muslims, especially at this holy time of Ramadan.
The Prophet (PBUH) would truly bless our leadership in this case.

I don't think he is much of a drinker.
He is a Grandpa, and probably tired of all the turmoil.

Of course, but I'd say you have your western hat on as alcohol consumption in the home in the west during lockdowns where the pubs are closed usually doesn't involve gatherings. Contrast that with here (or Thailand for that matter) where the culture is such that drinking is usually associated as a group social activity (often as part of the neighbourhood). Hence the illogicality in your eyes.

Give a box of Cambodia beer to me and I'll mostly drink it with Mrs Cargo having a few along the way in the privacy of our home. Give a box to a khmer and it will most likely be shared with a much larger group as a social activity (aka party if you like). And I don't mean that in a disrespectful way to khmers at all..just a different culture. So yeah, I'm not happy that I can't buy alcohol for personal consumption at home but I can see the logic for doing so for the wider population as covid cases are exploding and especially during Khmer New Year.

^^ Agree with cc. Drinking alcohol (beer) in Cambodia is a social activity. Alcohol = social gatherings= possible virus spread.
Much like the ban on weddings - it's not the wedding itself that is a problem - it's the social factors. You cannot have a Khmer wedding without loads of guests.

It's not the alcohol, it's not the weddings, and it's not even karaoke that spread viruses. But these are all factors that encourage people to mix and mingle, which is exactly what the authorities are trying to discourage.
