Imminent Russian Invasion of Ukraine

Yeah, that place out 'there'. Anything not really Cambodia related should go here.

Imminent Russian Invasion of Ukraine

Post by IraHayes »

From Stars & Stripes
U.S. European Command has raised its threat level over worries that Russia is massing forces around eastern Ukraine, where the Pentagon says tensions have escalated in recent weeks.

“We’re discussing our concerns about this increase in tensions and cease-fire violations and regional tensions with NATO allies,” Pentagon spokesman John Kirby told reporters Wednesday.

The situation in Ukraine prompted Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Gen. Mark Milley on the same day to connect with his counterparts in both Russia and Ukraine, in an attempt to de-escalate a situation that has prompted fears within Ukraine of a looming Russian offensive.

Gen. Tod Wolters in the past week raised EUCOM’s watch level for Ukraine from possible crisis to potential imminent crisis — the highest level, The New York Times reported Wednesday. EUCOM declined to comment on the threat level change, but said it is monitoring events in Ukraine carefully.
Russia is moving serious amounts of military hardware and troops to the border with Ukraine.
The US estimates that Russia has about 32,700 military personnel in Crimea, some 28,000 personnel in "separatist" units in areas of eastern Ukraine known collectively as the Donbass who have been fighting the government in Kiev since 2015.
Russia really wants the traditional Ukraine (up to the line of Odessa/Vinnetsa) back.

As a bonus prediction we may see China invade Taiwan when it sees NATO and the rest of the world do virtually nothing to counter the Russians offensive.

It's like every cool place is getting shut down or caught up in crazy stuff these days. All and all it looks like exercises, intimidation, and aid to Ukrainian rebels from Russia but I don't know about invasion yet.

Russia's hungry for another bite of the ukranian pie. If you have problems at home, start a war and divert attention.

I don't know if it's true. But the timing couldn't be better to do such a thing. Any country is getting away with anything right now. If I was Vlad, I probably couldn't resist this golden opportunity for a land grab.

Looking at a map of the region, it's obvious why the Russians want to establish themselves in the Crimea and surrounding regions - they need to assure passage through the Black Sea for their navy.

Ukraine is basically screwed on this - a fault of geography....
