Yeah, I thought it was ticking over and scraping by, it always attracted a regular customer base. It was always good for people watching but that was when there were people to watch. It is so quite up there these days, and as they are so exposed, any 'sneaky beers' is very much on show. Plus big rents on those locations.

Riverside continues is decline into economic Armageddon. If they threw the doors open tomorrow with tourist VOA's and no testing at all, the quickest thing to get back to normal will be the Tuk-Tuks prices :D (good luck to them anyway).
Yeah I am a bit surprised, mainly because I thought they would hang on and it shows just how bad things have got. I guess the alcohol ban was the final straw.
Small bars and restaurants might re-open as the capital outlay is not too great, but those monsters on the corner of Riverside are another beast altogether and deep pockets are required.

I do wonder how many of these shuttered bars and restaurants are now simply a shell behind those shutters. If the landlords forfeited the entire deposits and made little or no allowance for major refurbs and improvements, I suspect an awful lot of asset stripping occurred. I know that Cheers Bar was stripped to the walls. They would of had the plaster if they could. I think they took up the tiles on the floor including the outside!

It is a pity, because with a 'turn key' operation, some might get re-let easily when the tourists return. But if you have to spend a packet to fit it out, many will shy away.

This place is just a few blocks away from where I live. They were obviously open for business but from what I saw they were very low key. I assumed they were being kept open as they are frequented by the military guys whose buildings are on the other side of 215.

I had some very tasty Chicken Pies from there recently. So are all the big boys still closed down? I thought everything was going to be normal.

The landlord's price is right in these cases. Anyway was not the area planed to be built on by high-rise Chinese projects?

Further to my comment above, I walked past the long closed down Come Here Restaurant on the corner of street 19 and 172. The shutters were open for the first time in months so I took a peek.

It has been destroyed internally, right down to most of the light fitting removed and even the glass tiles that were glued to the wall behind the bar. The few that remained are all broken so not all survived the extraction. The ceiling has partially caved in where something has been removed from it. What remains of the bar structure is still there but only fit for removal.

I suspect most of these bars and restaurants that have been abandoned by the business owners did the same thing when their deposit was lost and no allowance for substantial improvement was given by the landlord. So, strip it out and give it back to the landlord in exactly the same shit states that you found it.

The capital destruction is enormous, for all concerned. The business owners end up with a pile of mostly worthless junk, and the landlord has a building that now requires substantial investment just to open the doors. Good luck finding someone willing to roll the dice at this stage of things.
