Pregnant Indigenous Woman Dies in Childbirth and Body is Dumped
Cambodia News, (Ratanakkiri): Ratanakkiri authorities are reacting on a report of a 31-year-old Kreung woman who died due to complications during pregnancy in February. The doctors at Banlung provincial hospital and an ambulance driver are accused of callous and inhumane treatment of the woman.
According to the brother of the victim, Ka Vem Veang, his sister had life-threatening complications in her third pregnancy, and she was taken to the provincial hospital on February 22, 2021. He said the medical team did not seem too care much about his sister and used inappropriate words and rudeness. The doctors dismissed the family, saying there is no cure, and even if the baby is removed by surgery, it will die.
The woman died the next morning, and the relatives got an ambulance to transport the body back to their village in Vern Sai district, Ratanakkiri province. But when the ambulance arrived at the gas station at the crossroads into Kachon commune, the driver suddenly wanted to drop the woman's body there, saying that the house was too far away. Despite the pleading of the woman's relatives, the ambulance driver unloaded the body and left it on the side of the road. The family then took the body on a motorcycle to their home. They said that it was very difficult to transport because the woman had died while she was still pregnant.
The husband of the deceased, Yen Yon, was engaged in farming, and like his wife, he belongs to the Kreung minority, and has two daughters, 7 years old and 8 years old, living in Kachon village, Vern Sai district, Ratanakkiri province.
This outrageous behavior by the medical team and ambulance driver was eventually brought to the notice of the authorities after it was made public in local media. Regarding this case, Mr. Ung Ratana, Director of Ratanakkiri Provincial Health Department has said that he was working to resolve a penalty for the driver who did not reach the destination, because it is unethical to treat indigenous and poor people in this way.

Ambulance driver fired over body dumping
Chhun Sunly / Khmer Times
The ambulance driver who refused to transport the corpse of a pregnant woman and dumped her body on the side of the road was fired by the Ratanakiri governor yesterday.
“The ambulance driver was fired by the provincial governor yesterday. However, the provincial referral hospital was blamed for negligence in its work,” said Nhem Sam Oeun, Ratanakiri provincial spokesman.
The 31-year-old woman’s brother, Kavem Wang, said she arrived at the provincial referral hospital on February 22, but he felt the doctors didn’t pay much attention because they were poor. His sister, Kvem Mak died the next day.
The hospital assigned Un Bunleng to transport her body back to the village, but halfway there he stopped the ambulance and left Mak’s body on the side of the road.
