When did you make the move to Cambodia?

Post by Grand Barong »

When did you move to Cambodia on a permanent/semi permanent basis? was it retirement or work motivated?
Do you wish you made the move sooner?

I left OZ 5 yrs ago on retirement but was thinking I would most likely live in Thailand. 'Thailand immigrations' attitude ended that so 3 yrs ago I came here and stayed.

exactly, and still jumping though all the hoops, not like Cambodia , simple renew retirement once a year. No money in the bank no bank statements of money coming in every month

Enlighten me if you would because I'm not familiar, what was the arrangement for retirees in Thailand before and what changed? Does one need that amount in the bank permanently or at periods of review? Is it a yearly payment and total or just one or the other?

I have heard a lot about Thailand trying to clean up Chinese tourists and some broke farangs. When I heard that it seemed like a natural consequence that Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia would pick them up.

This seems like a reasonable request (and number) from the Thai govt.

I feel as though one could contribute quite a lot to Thailand while having more of their wealth tied in real assets than dollars with a lower minimum capital requirement, but certainly enough to buy a short notice ticket for any parties and to cover living for a few months is enough, maybe 10k USD.

Well, Vietnam would not be a good option for "broke" retired foreigners, as there is no retirement visa scheme. On top of that, there are recently enacted laws about renewing tourist visas, leaving the country, etc (although Covid has prevented them from being fully tested just yet).

Came for the 1st time in 2003, loved it and came back 3 times in 2004. In 2005 I packed up, moved and now in my 16th year. Neither retirement or work motivated it was for a 'new life'. Timing was probably correct.
