As far as i've heard most of the cheap charlies packed up for vietnam because it's less wild west than Cambodia.Ong Tay wrote: ↑Fri Mar 19, 2021 7:16 amWell, Vietnam would not be a good option for "broke" retired foreigners, as there is no retirement visa scheme. On top of that, there are recently enacted laws about renewing tourist visas, leaving the country, etc (although Covid has prevented them from being fully tested just yet).KTabi wrote: ↑Fri Mar 19, 2021 3:44 amEnlighten me if you would because I'm not familiar, what was the arrangement for retirees in Thailand before and what changed? Does one need that amount in the bank permanently or at periods of review? Is it a yearly payment and total or just one or the other?phuketrichard wrote: ↑Thu Mar 18, 2021 8:30 pmso u left Thailand cause u didn't have $26,200 to leave in the bank>?
Or didn't want pay $460/year
I have heard a lot about Thailand trying to clean up Chinese tourists and some broke farangs. When I heard that it seemed like a natural consequence that Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia would pick them up.

It is also their country and they may do as they please.KTabi wrote: ↑Fri Mar 19, 2021 7:05 amI feel as though one could contribute quite a lot to Thailand while having more of their wealth tied in real assets than dollars with a lower minimum capital requirement, but certainly enough to buy a short notice ticket for any parties and to cover living for a few months is enough, maybe 10k USD.Big Daikon wrote: ↑Fri Mar 19, 2021 4:30 amThis seems like a reasonable request (and number) from the Thai govt.phuketrichard wrote: ↑Thu Mar 18, 2021 8:30 pmso u left Thailand cause u didn't have $26,200 to leave in the bank>?

Oh yes of course, just my two cents. I'm as free to pointlessly speculate as they are to reject my thoughts and do as they please.Big Daikon wrote: ↑Fri Mar 19, 2021 10:40 am It is also their country and they may do as they please.

There are many good reasons to leave Thailand if you feel inclined to do so, but this one I never get. As long as you're at least 50 years old, you can renew your retirement extension with very little effort and hardly any interaction with immigration. If you choose to. $300 for an ER extension in Cambodia or $500 per year for the equivalent in Thailand via an agent hardly makes a difference either.

i started 2 years ago paying 14,000 for my retirement extension an never have to see the inside of a immigration office.
PLUS rather than tie up 800,000 at .25% in a thai bank, its earning 6%+
One thing i never understood here is why someone married only has to leave 400,000 in the bank, yet if ur single u need 800,000
guess they figure if ur married you will stay home with the wife
BUT if ur single ur going to be out everynight eating/drinking/whoring LOL

Those were the days!
Re: When did you make the move to Cambodia?
June 2015 was my first visit here coming down from Siem Reap to PP looking at those houses on stilts thinking I could see myself in a hammock under one of those with a bit of land around me, beer in hand the blues playing and a lovely Kmers girl cooking my lunch, that would be just nice, well 6 years of that can still handle the hammock, beer, music and girl but the locals I've had enough of them, they won't be happy till every last cent I own is thiers.
I'm standing up, so I must be straight.
