Covid - 20 Feb - are you changing your habits?

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

haha you're being presumptuous though. e.g. I've only made a few changes because I've already been wearing a mask, washing and sanitising hands for the last year.

Just to underline this: 64 new cases identified today.

OMG, we are all going to die Image.

A PCR test of 37+ cycles (an amplification of 1 trillion)...
Today the PCR test, which provides a yes or no answer if a patient is infected, doesn't say how much of the virus a patient has in their body.

PCR tests analyze genetic matter from the virus in cycles and today's tests typically take 37 or 40 cycles, but experts say this is too high because it detects very small amounts of the virus that don't pose a risk.

Another factor why Cambodia is probably doing so well. (aside from a young and relatively healthy population that gets loads of vitamin D from the sun)
In 2010, a virus similar to SARS-CoV-2 was already present in Cambodia

In November and December 2010, UNESCO and Cambodian authorities invited researchers from the Muséum National d'Histoire Naturelle in Paris to explore several sites in northern Cambodia. The goal was to study the biodiversity of bats near the Temple of Preah Vihear, and a large number of bats species were caught during this survey, including eight types of horseshoe bat (genus Rhinolophus). They’re of great interest for virologists, as they are the reservoir of all Sarbecoviruses, the group of coronaviruses that includes SARS-CoV and SARS-CoV-2, respectively responsible for the SARS epidemic in 2002-2004 and the current Covid-19 pandemic.

In 2020, 10 years after the expedition, the samples stored in a freezer at -80°C were taken out and tested by the Institut Pasteur of Cambodia (IPC) to look for Sarbecoviruses. A PCR test showed two positive results and a full sequencing of their genome started. Two variants of a virus close to SARS-CoV-2 were discovered in two bats of the species Rhinolophus shameli we captured in 2010 in a cave in the province of Steung Treng.

 Given the levels of testing here are pretty low, 64 positive tests is worrying, because the real number is probably double, triple, who knows how many times bigger. And if they're not identifying those cases then it's going to go crazy.
