VNA - The People’s Court of the southern border province of Tay Ninh on March 2 handed down the death penalty to a Nigerian man for illegally transporting nearly 4kg of the drug methamphetamine, in line with the 2015 Criminal Code.

Before the arrest, Ekwegbalu James Nzube, 45, stayed at Hoa Hong Hotel in To Ky street, Trung My Tay ward, District 12, Ho Chi Minh City.

According to the indictment, the man was caught illegally entering Vietnam from Cambodia by border guards at border marker No. 170/3 in Loi Thuan commune, Ben Cau district, Tay Ninh province, at 20:00 on July 30, 2020.

Four packages containing nearly 4kg of white crystals, later confirmed as meth, were found in his luggage. James Nzube confessed that he was hired by another Nigerian man, named Johe, with 2,000 USD [paid] to transport the drugs from Cambodia to Vietnam.

James Nzube entered HCM City via Tan Son Nhat airport on March 13, 2020 and stayed at Hoa Hong Hotel.

Common knowledge....take 600 grams or more into Vietnam, automatic death penalty. No other sentence option for their courts.

And they carry out a lot of those sentences too.

Although information on the death penalty is classified as a state secret (like China, so they are in good company), information does get out from time to time. The number of executions carried out is 429 over 4 years between 2013 -2016.
With 1134 on death row at that time, those are odds that you shouldn't be too confident about.

In February 2017, the Ministry of Public Security (the national police force) – for the first time – released a report, stating that between 2011-2016, Vietnam was holding 1,134 people on death row and that from 2013-2016, 429 people were executed by lethal injection.

The name of the lethal drugs, however, was not disclosed.

To date, death-row inmates are continued to be executed by unknown drugs and undisclosed procedures.

The MPS’ report in 2017 was also the first and last of its kind.

Drug Trafficking: Another Nigerian sentenced to death in Vietnam
14th April 2021
by Ada Ada, Vietnam
For transporting three kilograms of methamphetamine from Cambodia to Vietnam, a 25-year-old Nigerian was sentenced to death.

On Tuesday, April 13, Unachukwu Chiluba Paulinus was convicted in a court in the southwestern province of Tay Ninh.

On February 19, 2020, he was apprehended while illegally transporting narcotic drugs in the Ta Pheng region of Thuan Tay hamlet in Loi Thuan commune, Ben Cau district.

Unachukwu informed police that he arrived in Cambodia in 2019 and met Oscar, an African man who hired him to transport drugs from Phnom Penh to Ho Chi Minh City for 2,000 USD. He received a payment of 650 USD in advance.

After taking a taxi from Phnom Penh to the border, he crossed into Vietnam and was apprehended by police in the Ben Cau area.

He also confessed to having earlier transported a backpack containing drugs from Cambodia to HCM City, which he delivered to an unknown man.

This comes a few days after 45-year-old Ekwegbalu James Nzube, another Nigerian was also sentenced to death for trafficking nearly four kilograms of methamphetamine.

Nzube said he got acquainted with another Nigerian, Jone, in China in 2014 and the latter had hired him to transport drugs from Cambodia to Vietnam.

He said he went to Ho Chi Minh City in March before going to Cambodia to get the drugs for which he was paid $2,000.

Any initiative to forward these press reports to Nigerian forums, in order to shed a light on the consequences of "great jobs opportunities, beginners accepted" kind of local ads ?
Fortunately they speak english too...

Yep, trying to get a teaching job or something else like that, is better then firstly being in Cambodia in possession of Chinese tea packages, and secondary being Nigerian arriving on the Vietnam side.
Always "hope" but never "expect".

To be an African, in East Asia. Especially with their reputation! I mean, these guys are generally really good?, or the mafia has got deeper hooks than we think!
Take Shinjuku--African touts and pick-pockets plain as night in super-conformist society.
Is an Asian prison? a form of a Captain's standard outpost? I mean wtf, imagine it the other way around!

In regards to the 4k's and a 650 advance--that’s tempting as hell isn’t it?--take it and run--but they sure got a system of checks in place above the stranger in a strange land i'm sure. Then the poor clod tries to claim his pay and the prix probably shaft him by half. If they didn't, we wouldn't hear about it so much cuz boyyy they squeaL!!

Nigerians don’t have a bad reputation. There are only racist white people who like to single out Nigerians because they are bored and like to live up to their globalization of their racist modus.

Chinese have a bad reputation not Nigerians so get your facts straight. The Chinese are on the news at least 4 or 5 times a week, but somehow it’s the Nigerians with a bad name.

They certainly do. I know perfectly respectable Nigerians (and have done all my life) and even they easily acknowledge that Nigerians have a bad reputation. Of course there are gangsters from other African nations here, but Nigeria is populous and well represented in the prisons of SE Asia.
Silence, exile, and cunning.
