Cambodian PM details plans for anti-drug campaign - a rising issue in country

Phnom Penh, Feb 28 (Phnom Penh Post/ANN): Prime Minister HE has laid out plans for a new campaign to combat illegal drugs this year in light of the persistence of traffickers and users despite previous government efforts to stamp out drug-related activities.
According to Plan No 01 signed on Feb19, drug offences have not declined across the Kingdom in line with the suspensions of activities related to investment, trade, industry, agriculture, services and culture on account of the pandemic.
In particular, drugs like methamphetamine (also known as ‘ice’), MDMA (‘ecstasy’) and ketamine had proliferated widely. They are easily produced and concealed for transport, it said, noting that the market for these products was expansive.
“The situation here is such that criminals surreptitiously smuggle drugs via Cambodia for the purpose of exporting them to other countries as well as serving the domestic market,” HE said.
During last year’s campaign, police operations resulted in the detention of 21,566 suspects in connection with 10,461 cases.
Total seizures of illegal drugs amounted to 3,875kg – as well as 4,425kg of related chemicals, equipment and other evidence. Seventy-seven cases were deemed major drug trafficking crimes.
HE noted that this year’s efforts constitute the government’s sixth anti-drug campaign, and he encouraged police to step up all enforcement-related activities against the importation, distribution and use of illegal drugs, especially monitoring targets prone to drug offences.

Re: Cambodia's Anti-Drug Campaign 2021
Well there might be some but I can only remember one or two major operations being busted in the past decade. It's more likely that the methamphetamines, heroin and ketamine being trafficked through here is from labs in Myanmar and China. Let us know if you know different but otherwise you are just speculating.Phnom Poon wrote: ↑Mon Mar 01, 2021 12:28 amyupCEOCambodiaNews wrote: ↑Mon Mar 01, 2021 12:10 am “The situation here is such that criminals surreptitiously smuggle drugs via Cambodia for the purpose of exporting them to other countries as well as serving the domestic market,” HE said.

Re: Cambodia's Anti-Drug Campaign 2021
let me check google maps, i'm sure some of the labs are listed there
of course myanmar is the daddy, being even more of a mafia state
but it doesn't take much digging into statistics etc to understand this is a growing problem in cambodia
and basic economics suggests the reason
it's cheap to make; production costs can be a much smaller fraction than trafficking costs

Re: Cambodia's Anti-Drug Campaign 2021
The evidence from all the busts to date suggests that narcotics are streaming in here from other states via the north and west borders, and some substances like cocaine are being flown in via west Africa (at least until recently). Precursor chemicals for the production of methamphetamines/ ketamine etc and sophisticated labs are not easily available here. It is of course possible that there are secret laboratories here but until we see some proof that's pure speculation on your part.Phnom Poon wrote: ↑Mon Mar 01, 2021 9:35 pm let me check google maps, i'm sure some of the labs are listed there
