Facebook versus Australia
Re: Facebook versus Australia
Always good to read contrary pieces. It will be more telling when we really get to see the UK, EU and US responses to what Oz is trying. This one has legs and will run and run...SternAAlbifrons wrote: ↑Tue Feb 23, 2021 6:27 pmHey Yerg.Yerg wrote: ↑Tue Feb 23, 2021 5:39 pm Well, in a little news snippet today, it appears that "Australia caves in to Facebook: Zuckerberg agrees to reinstate news after government agrees to water down new laws to force tech giants to pay for content."

Hold your horses everybody - here is a very different take on todays events..
Facebook's capitulation in Australia is the beginning of the project to regulate Big Tech – not the end
A week ago, Facebook was telling media companies they would not do any deal if the news media bargaining code became law. Now it appears to accept the right of Australia’s elected representatives to set the rules.

Demonstrating that this move against Facebook and the other tech giants is far bigger than just Australia's politicians "doing Murdochs bidding" >>
What Facebook's Australia news ban could mean for its future in the US. (and the world)
Facebook’s dramatic decision last week to block news from being shared to its users in Australia is already seeing global legislative aftershocks and may present new challenges for the company in the US.
When it comes to legislation addressing the unchecked power of big tech, the question is not if but when it will come, said Bruce Wolpe, a fellow at the University of Sydney’s United States Studies Centre. Facebook’s forceful approach in Australia would only raise the pressure for action, he said.
“Thanks to its extreme heavy-handedness in Australia, all eyes are now on Facebook,” Wolpe said. “It really made an extreme tactical mistake in shutting down something of such fundamental importance to the public interest.”
The incident has already made its way to the US Congress. In antitrust discussions on Thursday, it was cited by Representative David Cicilline as a reflection of Facebook’s outsized power over publishers, underscoring heightened interest in the issue and potential legislation on the horizon.
