Cheaper and easier on your own two wheels, even if you take your sweet ass time at a safe/relaxed pace (stopping whenever you feel like it, sightseeing, etc). I did the trip three times and don't think I'd ever do it again. It's a crap shoot how long it takes, so I don't like playing the lottery with my time. Fun the first time though if you're with a group of people.
I don't ride bikes. Never have and never will.

I enjoy riding motorcycles here, but the day I took the train from Kampot to Phnom Penh, was more needed due to me ending up with a bout of bad syatica in my ass from the road trip up to that stage.
I did always want to try the train though. And I am glad I did.

You will never see the countryside like you do from the train. I hope it's not my last journey on the Cambodian Royal Railway. The 125cc are the price quoted, but the larger bike's are more expensive.

Train does look inviting, will definitely do it sometime soon, just when Kep/Kampot/Kep the roads improved a lot, no road works, hope Kampot/ Sihanoukville is as good, roadworks finnish , but not looking forward to it even more now they have confirmed covid there.

Spend a little more time in Kep, it's usually pretty quiet, keeping an eye open and ear to the ground. Decide what is best for you to do, what you don't need is what happened to us, getting turned away from hotels, and refused entire into restaurants., Worse still if they put restrictions on travel.

This happened on our last bike trip when we was heading for the Angkor temples. We we're the last to leave the Mekong Crossing Hotel in Kampong Cham before the owner closed, I here he is still in Phnom Penh and has not returned to his hotel to reopen. We was refused food in Kampong Cham and also Kampong Thom has well has accommodation.

In non-Covid years I am a frequent visitor to Kep, which is a lovely Cambodian seaside town that I and my Cambodian friends enjoy very much indeed.
But I just take a private taxi from Phnom Penh or return for my friends and myself and enjoy easy and air-con comfort and convenience door-to-door at US$45 for the lot of us - although I usually tip/round it out to US$50.
Kep is a wonderful Cambodian sea side resort town provided you are a person not seeking bright lights and western bars and restaurants etc.
Kep is a place for those that still are able to enjoy conversation and self-amusement and come to Cambodia to enjoy Cambodia and Cambodians. It is not an expat enclave thank goodness.

They’ve started the development of the place though. There’s what looks like some major foundations for a new building off to the right, on the road up from the beach. I don’t imagine there’ll be much design flair or character if recent building designs are anything to go by.

Go east along the coast road from the beach, and there’s a row of same-same concrete bungalow shells going up, on the north side of the road.
And between the crab market and the beach, there’s another development that has a commercial feel to it, with what looks like that awful pressed metal/pseudo tile roof cladding.

They’re going to spoil it.

I'm not sure where these "expat enclaves" are. Kep has quite a few foreign-owned businesses and residences but like anywhere else in the country it's still majority Khmer.
