Re: Road from Phnom Penh to Kep?
Train is horrible. Took 6+ hours last time, and the main highway is basically finished, and then he'd have to go to Kep on top of it. Main road to Keep is fine, just take the 3 and then cut off by Angkor Borei.Doc67 wrote:You can go on the train too, thus avoiding all these suicide alleys. You can take your bike too, it goes in a cargo wagon on the back of the train.
It's about 4 hours to Kampot, you get to see the countryside, it has AC and has a buffet outlet (take your own food is my advice) It stops once in Takmeo. From Kampot you can then take a leisurely drive to Kep and satisfy your wild biker spirit needs.
Trains leave PP at 7am, on Friday/Saturday/Sunday and return to PP at 11am on Saturday/Sunday/Monday. $7 pp each way.
Let the train take the strain! (and eliminate the risk of death or serious injury too)

By the time I packed the bike on the train and the train left I'd be a hour down the road to Kep, not that I'm in a hurry it's getting up 5:30-6 to catch the train, prefer the morning boom boom then breakfast before heading off
I'm standing up, so I must be straight.

Re: Road from Phnom Penh to Kep?
Well, we’ve just arrived. Just short of 4 hours, with 2 stops en-route for kids who can’t control primary body functions- food going in and out of the same orifice, etc.
Sedate drive by private taxi. Highlander. In truth, it was just over 3 hours driven, unhurried. The road is in a pretty good state, now. A little bit dusty in places, with a couple of contra-flow sections, but smooth.
Slow getting to the south of PP, and then the last bit once leaving road 31 for 33, then a fairly steady pace. A better start time avoiding PP traffic might easily see another 20 minutes saved without having to pick up the pace.
A world of difference from the last time that I drove the route myself.

I'll report back sometime next week on my trip and road conditions but can't see it being less than 6 hours from last experience, it takes me two days to go PP to Siem reap and that's pushing it

I have not been down Road 2 for a long time but I know it was under reconstruction and a mess from what others told meAndyKK wrote: ↑Mon Feb 15, 2021 7:00 amWhat is road 2 conditions down to road 31?atst wrote: ↑Mon Feb 15, 2021 4:53 amThanks, that the way I was thinking of taking.Element6 wrote: ↑Mon Feb 15, 2021 2:35 am the worst part of the road now is 20A between road 2 and road 3 (assuming you are coming down HE Boulevard). As you pass the weighing station just after joining road 3 there is a small unpaved section but for the rest of the way from there to Kep the road is good. I go down Road 3 then split on to road 31, much faster than going via Kampot. In the ca iit takes me 2.5 to 3 hours each way but I try to avoid peak times. That is departing from near Russian Market to arriving in kep

The train is fantastic, I don't care how long the journey takes. You are comfortable with good views and safety.Doc67 wrote: ↑Mon Feb 15, 2021 8:37 am You can go on the train too, thus avoiding all these suicide alleys. You can take your bike too, it goes in a cargo wagon on the back of the train.

Always "hope" but never "expect".
Re: Road from Phnom Penh to Kep?
Yes correct, took 8 hours last time I used it and the train even backed in reverse on some stretches!Jerry Atrick wrote: ↑Mon Feb 15, 2021 4:39 pmI cannot reccomend train for this journey.Doc67 wrote: ↑Mon Feb 15, 2021 8:37 am You can go on the train too, thus avoiding all these suicide alleys. Re: Road from Phnom Penh to Kep?
In the Year 2525, if man is still alive, there will be high speed rail between The Penh and Kep to the tune of 320 km/hr.
Re: Road from Phnom Penh to Kep?
Did exactly this route 20a pretty bad but not so dusty and I think better on a bike than car you can avoid most pot holes, an hour after leaving PP riverside was having first beer stop on road 3 past all the bad road bits, I think better to be sitting there than waiting for the train to leave, sorry DocElement6 wrote: ↑Mon Feb 15, 2021 2:35 am the worst part of the road now is 20A between road 2 and road 3 (assuming you are coming down HE Boulevard). 31 is good all the way and less traffic
Was sitting down with kilo of crab at market in the afternoon
