What was long feared to materialize under the Joe Biden administration has finally happened. According to a Reuters report, when asked about the USA’s stance on the imperialistic ‘One-China policy’ — the US State Department and its spokesperson Ned Price on Wednesday during a regular briefing told the reporters: “Yes … our policy has not changed.”

While the decision does not come as a surprise to anyone, considering Joe Biden’s allegiances to Xi Jinping and China but the experts were hoping that the new Democrat President would show some more maturity while dealing with the delicate policy issue.

The Biden team has quashed the dreams of anything happening on those lines and the millions of Taiwanese will have to start from scratch to win their freedom. It’d be fair to suffice that with Ned Price’s statements, Biden has crushed Taiwan and Tibet’s hopes and killed Hong Kong’s spirit. The latter two also stood an outside chance of gaining their independence under the Trump rule but Biden has made sure that avenue remains closed for the next four years, at least.

As to the claim that Biden is soft on China, he just ordered two carrier groups to the South China Sea

The aircraft carriers USS Nimitz and USS Theodore Roosevelt and their strike groups met in the contentious South China Sea for joint operations on Tuesday, according to a Navy statement.

“The ships and aircraft of the two strike groups coordinated operations in a highly trafficked area to demonstrate the U.S. Navy's ability to operate in challenging environments,” the statement said.

Two-carrier exercises are relatively rare, though they have seen a recent uptick in frequency. As of Tuesday, just nine have taken place in the Indo-Pacific region since 2001 — four since June.

the policy is the same, it has not 'gone back'
it would be pretty big step to announce, off the cuff, that the policy had in fact changed
and it doesn't mean that it won't change in future

but now i feel like a school-teacher explaining basic media savvy, if not basic critical thinking

Well, (unlike your outraged headline), Reuters doesn't say that they have changed policies at all. On the contrary, there is no change. One week (3 Feb) in from the new US admistration taking over, this is not surprising. The news is that there is nothing changed. (Stop linking to kooky conspiracy sites btw. )

Which is the most rational and pragmatic course to follow. Exactly what would the US achieve by supporting Taiwan and HK against Beijing? Like Chine would cave in and say, you know what, you are right, these islands deserve their own independence. Get real. All it would be is a long (very long) drawn out war of words, sanctions, trade restrictions, threats etc etc and in the end nothing changes. Suppose Hawaii or Alaska wanted independence, would the US be happy for China to support them? Diplomacy is always about accepting the lesser evil - it is still an evil, but the alternative is worse. And working behind the scenes, building relationships, looking for ways to assist human rights. To ask Biden to push against Beijing is just naivety and ignorance - knee jerk politics, waste of emotion and effort.
