Lieutenant Ream Rothanak said the victim was identified as Noun Soeung, 51 years old, a soldier at the Artillery office. The victim had found a stock of buried UXOs, and he took one to go fishing, but it exploded and caused him to get seriously injured in the face and hand.

This is something expected of a hick farmer. This guy is an officer of artillery. His job is to know better and tell soldiers under his command and civilians NOT to do dumb stuff like this.
The why is obvious.

Hate to say it but damn that's some serious Darwinism in action.

Well, a Soldier at the artillery office.51 years old, a soldier at the Artillery office
If he’s in the artillery, forget the telling others about doing stupid shit, he should know what the potential for mishandling is, for his own benefit.
At 51years old, and with no rank appended in the article, it may be that he’s not at the higher end of the performance scale.

Hard to tell as there's nothing for scale (is that a rusted out jerrycan or something else?). I'd say 25mm (or Chinese/Russian equivalent) or possibly AA as you say.John Bingham wrote:What are they? AA rounds?
And yeah, being a soldier here doesn't mean you're a sharp tool, good at your trade or whatever. He obviously wasn't very clued up despite being supposedly an artillery officer (I don't think they mean officer as in he had a commission though, more like he was in the artillery battalion. However, it's not like they train often).

For scale, but nothing accurate, we have
Foot/shoe/boot tread prints
Nylon sack weave
A plastic bag that may well have carried a pressed palm drink, or iced coffee thingy.
So, Rounds, not bombs.*
25 of one type and 7 of another- not spent, inert, or stable. Pretty sizeable caliber, over half inch. Certainly big enough to really ruin your day.
30spent rounds.
Khmer translation issue?
Her in doors and her family will say Lan (car) whether she means Lan (car) or Lan (bus- lanoklong) or Lan (truck- Lan doektomninh), as a lazy abbreviation. I wonder if it’s a similar situation?

12.5mm for DShK ?? Looks the same.
Russian. Heavy machine gun/AA. Range 28,000 ft
"As the United States ramped up its intervention in South Vietnam, Communist forces continued to make heavy use of DShK’s as anti-aircraft weapons, which were mistakenly designated “.51-caliber machine guns” by American troops. While less deadly than heavier North Vietnamese flak cannons, the DShK’s were more easily smuggled into South Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos, and remained effective at shooting down Huey helicopters and slow-moving Forward Air Control spotter planes like the O-1 Birddog. Ground fire, not surface-to-air missiles or MiGs, would account for the majority of the roughly 5,500 helicopters and two thousand fixed-wing aircraft lost by the U.S. military over Vietnam."
Apart from for local use, i once read that the NVA had dedicated AA teams in NW Cambodia to intercept Thai based USAF on their missions into Vietnam.
Also used for anti-tank and other ground use in Cambodia.
