Rampaging Myanmar soldiers killed 17 people in 2 villages, residents say
BANGKOK - Soldiers in Myanmar rampaged through several villages, raping, beheading and killing at least 17 people, residents said, in the latest of what critics of the ruling military say are a series of war crimes since the army seized power two years ago.

The bodies of 17 people were recovered last week in the villages of Nyaung Yin and Tar Taing -- also called Tatai -- in Sagaing region in central Myanmar, according to members of the anti-government resistance and a resident who lost his wife. They said the victims had been detained by the military and in some cases appeared to have been tortured before being killed.

The army has been conducting major offensives in the countryside, including burning villages and driving hundreds of thousands of people from their homes. It has faced some of its toughest resistance in Sagaing, in Myanmar's historic heartland.

The soldiers involved in last week's attacks were in a group of more than 90 who were brought to the area by five helicopters on Feb. 23, said local leaders of the pro-democracy People's Defense Forces and independent Myanmar media.

They said the bodies of 14 people, including three women, were found Thursday on a small island in a river in Nyaung Yin. Three more male victims were found in Tar Taing, including two members of the local resistance. One of the two was dismembered, with his head cut off, they said.

The neighboring villages are about 45 kilometers (28 miles) west of the major city of Mandalay.

Tar Taing resident Moe Kyaw, 42, survived the attack but said his 39-year-old wife, Pan Thwal, and 18-year-old nephew were among those killed. Contacted by phone, he said Friday they were among 70 villagers detained in the middle of the night last Wednesday by soldiers who shot into the air as they herded their captives from their homes to the local Buddhist monastery.

More atrocities:

The bloody #massacre of civilians happen again in Pinlaung township, Shan-Kayah state.
3 monks and 30 civilians of different ages were killed by the SAC’s troops while they raided the village on 11th, said resistance fighters.

This village is in an area of fierce fighting close to Naypyidaw, ( the capital) with younger ethnic Pa-O PDFs joining Karenni insurgents to challenge the pro-junta Pa-O National Organisation, a long-time beneficiary of cooperation with the military. Thousands displaced in recent fighting.

So sad. In more peaceful times about 4 years ago I used to regularly ride my motorbike from Naypyitaw, over the hills to Pinlaung and on my way to Taunggyi and Inle Lake region to donate school books etc. I'd stop on Pinlaung main road for fresh coffee and freshly-baked bread. I can't even imagine the horror that it has become :(

Myanmar army chief vows to crush resistance in rare speech

Image

sinister message - the country's armed forces won't stop fighting those opposing their rule, whatever the cost.

A civil war has engulfed the country since a military coup in 2021.

The conflict has killed tens of thousands of people, and more than a million have been displaced.

But General Min Aung Hlaing, the head of the military government, showed no signs of backing down in a rare speech.

The regime, he said, would deal decisively with what he described as "acts of terror" by armed resistance groups. And, he added, countries which have condemned his coup - supporters of terror, he branded them - were wrong and should join the military in shaping its own form of democracy.

Airstrike in Rebel-Held Region of Myanmar Kills at Least 100

It was the junta’s deadliest attack since seizing power in 2021. As resistance forces have become better armed, the military has doubled down on its strategy of carrying out air raids and targeting civilians.

Myanmar’s military regime continued its relentless campaign of airstrikes on Tuesday by bombing a large gathering in rebel-held territory, killing at least 100 people in the junta’s deadliest attack since seizing power in a coup more than two years ago.

At least 30 children were among the dead in the attack in Sagaing Region, said an emergency worker at the scene and an official of the shadow National Unity Government, which considers itself to be Myanmar’s true government. The death toll was expected to rise.

“This is a war crime,” said Byar Kyi, a soldier with a local resistance unit who was helping to recover bodies at the site. “The place they attacked was not a military target.”

Rescuers described a gruesome scene in Pazigyi Village in southern Sagaing Region, where body parts were scattered over a wide area after a military jet and helicopter bombed and strafed the largely civilian gathering.

Photos from the village being shared on social media showed more than a dozen burned and mutilated bodies, while videos showed a destroyed building, burned motorcycles and debris scattered over a wide area. Rescuers at the scene confirmed the authenticity of the images with The New York Times.

The apparent target of the attack was a celebration to mark the local resistance movement’s opening of an administration office. Only the charred frame of the building remained standing after the air raid, a video and photos showed.

Myanmar’s military, which has battled armed ethnic groups for territorial control since soon after independence in 1948, has a long history of brutal attacks on civilians.

Since the coup, pro-democracy forces have united with some armed ethnic groups in a national campaign to oust the military from power, creating the most unified resistance movement the military has faced.

As the rebel forces have become increasingly better armed, the military has doubled down on its strategy of carrying out deadly air raids and attacking civilians, including the killing of monks and civilians at a monastery last month.

In October, military jets attacked a concert in Kachin State, killing at least 80 people, among them musicians who were performing onstage at the time.

Much of Sagaing Region in the northwestern part of Myanmar, bordering India, is a rebel stronghold where the military’s ground forces have had difficulty gaining territory.

“The regime has increased its military budget and airstrikes are increasing,” said Aung Myo Min, the National Unity Government’s human rights minister. “The people of Myanmar are sending a message to the international community with their blood about the military’s brutal war crimes.”

The emergency worker at the scene said that at least 100 people were confirmed dead and that more remained unaccounted for. Mr. Aung Myo Min, who was not at the scene, said that 53 intact bodies had been found and that recovery efforts continued.

In a statement on Tuesday evening on the military’s television network, Myawaddy TV, the junta’s spokesman, Maj. Gen. Zaw Min Tun, confirmed that the armed forces had carried out an airstrike on Pazigyi Village but said the target was rebel forces gathered there.

He asserted that most of the casualties were resistance fighters, whom he called “terrorists,” but he acknowledged that children and women were among the dead. Rebels had brought the attack on themselves, he said, by assassinating the Pazigyi village chief last month and forcing villagers to join the rebel forces.

The number of casualties was high, General Zaw Min Tun said, because munitions had been stored at the site, which exploded when the bombs hit.
The aerial attack prompted human rights advocates to renew their call for a ban on the sale of aviation fuel to the regime.

Mr. Byar Kyi, who is a soldier with the Kyun Hla Underground Force, a local armed group, said that survivors of the attack told him it was carried out by a jet fighter and a combat helicopter. Russia has been a major contributor of such arms to the junta, despite its continuing war in Ukraine.

Several of the victims in Pazigyi Village were local resistance fighters who had come for the celebration, he said, but most were civilians. “There are many children and women,” he said, “in the pile of dead bodies.”

Lies coming from the government

Messages saying no civilians died in the Myanmar junta’s Pazigyi massacre are being shared by linked pro-army accounts. They are written in the army Department of Public Relations and Psychological Warfare’s usual font. Many civilians were reported dead. :please:

In first 3 months of 2023 , the Junta has conducted 25 indefensible airstrikes around #Myanmar killing 47 civilians.

Myanmar: Urgent need to suspend aviation fuel as air strikes wreak havoc

Responding to reports of deadly air strikes in Sagaing Region’s Kanbulu Township, Amnesty International’s Business and Human Rights Researcher Montse Ferrer said:

“Initial reports on deadly air strikes in Sagaing Region are horrifying. Unlawful air attacks killing and injuring civilians and destroying homes are a trademark of the Myanmar military, which goes to despicable lengths to crush resistance and instill fear in the population. Myanmar’s civilians bear the brunt of these sickening tactics.

“The relentless air attacks across Myanmar highlight the urgent need to suspend the import of aviation fuel. Amnesty reiterates its calls on all states and businesses to stop shipments that may end up in the hands of the Myanmar Air Force. This supply chain fuels violations of international humanitarian law, including war crimes, and it must be disrupted in order to save lives.

“While some meaningful action has been taken, the international community can and must do more to stop attacks on civilians in Myanmar. These air strikes come just ahead of the two-year anniversary of ASEAN’s five-point consensus on Myanmar, which has utterly failed to stop the military’s atrocities.

“Instead of taking a back seat, ASEAN must step up and play a leading role in resolving the human rights catastrophe in Myanmar. The United Nations Security Council must find ways to push through effective actions to hold the Myanmar military accountable, including by referring the situation in the country to the International Criminal Court.”

Absolutely fcuking awful! I read the daily reports of these atrocities on irrawaddy.com... What will it take to get ASEAN off their backsides and to take some positive action? (No, I don't mean military action because that would never happen - but proper sanctions and action against any ASEAN country/company dealing with the junta).

Having been declared cancer free, and with my prostate still intact(!), I am due to arrive back in Myanmar at the end of July, teaching in Mandalay again. I will find it hard to jog round the great fort (as I did daily last time in 2018), knowing that innocent civilians are being tortured inside its walls :(
