Myanmar crisis: 50 killed in air raid on Kachin rebels, reports say
Eyewitnesses in Kachin State, northern Myanmar, say aircraft dropped three bombs on a concert organised by the KIA in Kansi village.

Villagers said there was no warning before the raid.
The concert in Kansi was to mark the 62nd anniversary of the rebel army's campaign for autonomy.
Witnesses reported three huge explosions at around 20:30 (14:00 GMT) local time on Sunday. They ripped apart the cluster of buildings at the base and caused heavy casualties in the audience.

Myanmar Junta’s Deadly Airstrike on Kachin Concert a War Crime: KIA
KIA/KIO spokesperson Colonel Naw Bu said that the regime knows full well that such anniversaries are marked by large numbers of Kachin people and the airstrike was intended to target civilian crowds.

“They were shooting at civilians, not at the enemy. This is an evil act, and this is a war crime. We are grieving over the deaths of our people,” he said.

Statement by the United Nations in Myanmar on reported airstrikes in Hpakant, Kachin State
(Yangon) – The United Nations (UN) in Myanmar is deeply concerned and saddened by reports of airstrikes that took place in Hpakant, Kachin State around 8:00PM on 23 October 2022. Initial reports suggest that over 100 civilians may have been affected by the bombing. Numerous fatalities have also been reported.

While the UN continues to verify the details of this attack, we offer our deepest condolences to the families and friends of all those who were killed or injured. The UN calls for those injured to be availed urgent medical treatment, as needed.

What would appear to be excessive and disproportionate use of force by security forces against unarmed civilians is unacceptable and those responsible must be held to account.

Myanmar to free Australian Sean Turnell and Briton Vicky Bowman amid prisoner release
State media says almost 6,000 people will be released from prison, including four foreigners who had been held for months

Almost 6,000 people will be released from prison in Myanmar, including the Australian academic Prof Sean Turnell, Britain’s former ambassador Vicky Bowman and Japanese film-maker Toru Kubota, junta-controlled media has said.

On Thursday Myanmar’s state-run MRTV said that the foreign nationals, as well as a Burmese-American citizen, had been released and deported in a so-called amnesty timed to coincide with Myanmar National Day.

At the time of writing it was understood that Bowman had not yet been released and deported. The Guardian was unable to confirm whether other foreign nationals had yet been freed.

The military seized back power in a coup on 1 February 2021, and has arrested thousands of people, targeting anyone it suspects of opposing its rule, from nurses and teachers to social media stars and journalists.

Several foreign nationals have also been targeted, including Bowman, who was the British ambassador in Myanmar from 2002 to 2006.

Bowman and her husband, Htein Lin, a veteran democracy activist, were sentenced in September to one year in prison for violating immigration laws.

Kubota, who was arrested during a demonstration in Yangon in July, had been charged with sedition and violating a communications law. He had been sentenced to 10 years after being convicted of sedition, as well as breaching the immigration rules and an electronic communication law.

Australian academic Turnell had served for several years as an adviser to the democratically elected civilian government led by ousted leader Aung San Suu Kyi.

An economist at Sydney’s Macquarie University, Turnell was first detained on 6 February last year, less than a week after a military coup removed Myanmar’s elected government.

things are not getting better and the crisis is sledom mentioned outside local online reporting and twitter.
We are facing a crisis’: New law puts Myanmar NGOs in ‘impossible’ position
Many groups plan to boycott the regime’s new Organization Registration Law for political and safety reasons, but also fear this could leave them unable to respond to Myanmar’s humanitarian crisis.
By FRONTIER

For Ko Zin Yaw*, it was always a matter of when, not if, the military regime would begin systematically cracking down on civil society and non-government organisations.
Zin Yaw has since 2015 been working for a Rakhine State-based civil society organisation focused on regional development and supporting people displaced by conflict.

Over the past 18 months, he has experienced first-hand the growing restrictions the military regime has placed on the activities of domestic and international organisations, affecting everything from withdrawing cash to accessing conflict areas. Nevertheless, he said, they’d still managed to find workarounds so they could carry out many of their activities.

But then, on October 28, the regime enacted the Organization Registration Law, replacing a similarly named 2014 statute.
“All CSOs have been worried about [a crackdown],” he told Frontier. “Now it’s really happening … they are oppressing us openly.”
.....
Under the new law, however, running an unregistered organisation can result in a prison term of up to three years, while members of an unregistered NGO can be fined up to K500,000 and, if they refuse to pay, jailed for up to two years.

Organisations were also given only 60 days to register with the junta’s Ministry of Home Affairs, meaning a deadline at the end of this month.

“Freedom of organisation – a fundamental democratic right – has now been banned,” said Daw Nyo Nyo Thin, a lawyer who has run as an independent candidate in several parliamentary elections.

The toughest punishments are reserved for officials from organisations that “directly or indirectly contact or encourage” contact with an opponent of the regime, or are deemed to have harmed “national unity” or “law and order”. If convicted, they face up to five years in prison.

COURT IN MYANMAR AGAIN FINDS SUU KYI GUILTY OF CORRUPTION
BANGKOK (AP) — A court in military-ruled Myanmar on Friday convicted the country’s ousted leader Aung San Suu Kyi of corruption, sentencing her to seven years in prison in the last of a string of criminal cases against her, a legal official said.

The court’s action leaves her with a total of 33 years to serve in prison following a series of politically tinged prosecutions since the army toppled her elected government in February 2021.

The case that ended Friday involved five offenses under the anti-corruption law and followed earlier convictions on seven other corruption counts, each of which was punishable by up to 15 years in prison and a fine.

2022: A Year of Heroes and Villains in Myanmar
a good piece to read;
We send our year-end salutations to all people in Myanmar, in particular the resistance forces who are standing up to the murderous military regime run by bullying criminals.

One of the first things we learned in 2022 is that Russian President Vladimir Putin and Myanmar junta leader Min Aung Hlaing share a tendency to underestimate the public and their opponents. Ukraine did not fall to Russia and its defenders did not run away. To the surprise of the West and the international community as a whole, the Ukrainians stood and fought back. Putin was wrong.

Similarly, the people of Myanmar have refused to accept the military coup. This has been clear since last year, when thousands took to the streets to protest the illegal power grab. Using social media and other digital platforms they made it known that the coup maker can never win. Since then, Gen Z and their older compatriots have joined forces in the ethnic territories to fight the murderous regime.

nearly 2 years on an resistance continues against the Junta
yet the world has pushed it aside>
same thing they did with PolPot ;-(

Leaked minutes from a top-level “counterterrorism” meeting led by Home Affairs Minister Lieutenant-General Soe Htut show the junta is at its wit’s end after failing to drum up public support to crush the shadow National Unity Government (NUG).
The leaked document, which comes from a December meeting of the Central Committee for Counter-Terrorism, was shared online by Khit Thit Media.

Failures across the country

The junta’s security and border affairs ministers, reporting on the situation in their respective regions and states, indicated that the resistance movement was growing beyond control.

Kachin State’s security and border minister reported that the Kachin Independence Army (KIA) is training PDFs at its headquarters in Laiza, where it is also manufacturing weapons to supply resistance forces in Sagaing, Magwe and Mandalay regions.

The security and border minister for Sagaing, a resistance stronghold in central Myanmar, said PDFs were growing from a small armed organization into a large fighting force.

They were also using social media to implement new initiatives to drum up public support, he added.

At least 48 Myanmar junta forces including pro-regime militia members and regime-appointed administrators were killed in the last three days as People’s Defense Force (PDF) groups continued to attack regime targets across the country.

A resistance fighter was killed in a fierce clash with regime forces in Sagaing Region and two civilians were also killed during a shootout in Tanintharyi Region.

Incidents were reported in Sagaing, Mandalay, Magwe, Bago and Tanintharyi regions.

Gunfights between armed groups resulted in displacement.

Refugee shelters at No Man’s Land or Zero Point have been burned down. Innocent older people, women and children are suffering.

While atrocities continue
Unspeakably horrendous is the term best suited to describe the horror of the junta regime troops and its Pyu Saw Htee Group (militia people) leaving the two villages in the dark as Myanmar regime security forces killed a family of eight people in Ngamyaung and two people in Nyiangkung of Kanbalu township of Sagaing region on Saturday.

Both incidents are reported to have occurred secretly at night as the junta regime soldiers and Pyu Saw Htee stormed a family of eight and killed other two villagers in other village.

A five-year-old child was among the brutally slain in Ngamyaung village as this village was targeted by the junta regime forces as the majority in the village voted for National League for Democracy (NLD) during the 2020 election, Chindwin has learned.

2 years on:

good read;
Myanmar: Two years after coup, global action needed to halt military’s ‘nationwide assault on human rights’
The Myanmar military continues to arbitrarily arrest, torture and murder people with impunity two years after launching a coup, Amnesty International said today, calling for increased global action and solidarity ahead of the anniversary on 1 February.

Since the coup, nearly 3,000 people have been killed, 1.5 million have been internally displaced, more than 13,000 are still detained in inhumane conditions, and four people are known to have been executed while at least 100 have been sentenced to death. In addition, 7.8 million children are out of school.

The military’s onslaught against anyone perceived to be opposed to its rule has caused widespread fear and grave human rights violations, including through the use of air and ground attacks targeting civilians.

“There is no denying that the military is able to carry out its nationwide assault on human rights because of the shockingly inadequate global response to this crisis, which risks becoming forgotten,” said Ming Yu Hah, Deputy Regional Director for Campaigns. “We can’t let that happen. This anniversary should highlight the need for urgent global action from countries around the world and the Association for Southeast Asian Nations to protect the people of Myanmar, who remain under daily siege from the military.”

The United States slapped fresh sanctions on Myanmar Tuesday, a day before the Southeast Asian country marks the second anniversary of a military coup that launched a violent campaign against democracy activists.
The US Treasury placed sanctions on Myanmar Energy Minister Myo Myint Oo and the top two officials of the state-owned Myanma Oil and Gas Enterprise.

It also placed sanctions on Myanmar Air Force chief Htun Aung; Hla Swe, a former military official that the Treasury said provides arms to pro-regime militias; and Htoo Htwe Tay Za, daughter of Tay Za, a businessman whose large Htoo Group works closely with the Myanmar military.

In addition, the Treasury sanctions the military-controlled Union Election Commission and two state-owned mining companies.

excellent read:

Myanmar: Last Chance Before the Final Curtain Drops
New crises have distracted international attention from the country right at the time that it is needed the most.
Image
When the Myanmar military seized power on February 1, 2021, more than a decade’s worth of democratization efforts evaporated into thin air. Whereas the older generations experienced a return to life as they knew it before 2008, the younger generations brought up in an increasingly open society saw their futures turning darker by the minute. When their peaceful protests were met with violence and the international community did little to change the course of events, many lost faith in the idea of a values-based international society where compassion, accountability, and responsibility to protect were more than words.

The public’s repeated – and unanswered – calls for U.N. intervention during the first months of the coup illustrate both a deeply founded (and unfortunately naïve) trust in the international community and a shock over the brutality the military brought into the heart of the country’s urban centers. When no one came, many felt forced to take matters into their own hands.
