As expected, this catastrophe has all but vanished from the mainstream news media now with attention seeming to have shifted to the catastrophe in Afghanistan.

Thanks for keeping the focus and the updates on Myanmar coming.

Now is the time to recognize the genocide in Burma

Image

With Afghanistan grabbing global headlines, it’s easy to forget about another long-running crisis: the repression of Burma’s Rohingya Muslims. With the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) getting underway, the high-level session provides an important opportunity for the United States and United Kingdom to place the topic back on the global agenda—by calling the crimes committed by the country’s military (the Tatmadaw) a “genocide.”

Multiple American and British administrations have debated the question. And in the meantime, Burma’s military junta has continued systematically attacking the Rohingya and other ethnic minorities. A military-led coup in February served as a further distraction. Calling the Tatmadaw’s actions a “genocide” before UNGA would remind the world about this crisis. It would also discourage future atrocities by heaping new pressure on the regime.

The same generals who ordered the genocide against the Rohingya also led the February coup and subsequent crackdown, which has killed more than one thousand people who have protested the putsch. By failing to name the Rohingya genocide, the Tatmadaw will feel emboldened to escalate its campaigns against ethnic and religious minorities and further threaten the brave citizens who courageously demonstrated against the coup.

The coup of 1st February that ousted Myanmar’s elected members of Parliament and government has pushed the country into a humanitarian catastrophe that could lead to its collapse as a viable state.

Myanmar faces an abyss of disintegration through the effects of the coup d’etat, COVID-19 and the growing violence, with huge potential to disrupt and destabilize the region.

The people of Myanmar, across its many states and regions and ethnicities, have resisted the coup in acts of immense bravery. They face consistent abuses of their human rights that cannot be allowed to stand without a concerted international response.

Yet, all attempts from the international community to promote a peaceful and effective resolution of the crisis have so far proven ineffective.

In response to this, an alliance of individuals who care deeply for the country has come together to demand the following of the United Nations General Assembly:

Homes in Thantlang, Chin State, are burned down by military artillery fire on September 18 (Thantlang Times)

The Chinland Defence Force (CDF) ambushed Myanmar army troops on patrol in the largely deserted town of Thantlang, Chin State, on Monday.
A spokesperson for the CDF-Thantlang said that their members “intercepted and attacked” a 40-soldier unit that morning on a local road.

A junta base on a nearby hill provided cover for their troops by firing heavy artillery at the resistance fighters, but no local houses were hit, according to the CDF spokesperson.
The number of casualties was not known at the time of reporting.

One of the estimated 30 remaining Thantlang residents told Myanmar Now that he heard gunfire being exchanged for around half an hour.
“We are all hiding in fear. I don’t know what happened because I haven’t dared to go outside,” he said.

Those who have stayed behind in the town, which previously had a population of 8,000, are from two households in Thantlang or sheltering in an orphanage.

‘No Future’ for Myanmar People Unless Spring Revolution Succeeds
Myanmar’s military regime has been waging war in Chin State in the mountainous far west of the country for months. Intense fighting between the junta and civilian resistance groups has forced thousands of people to flee their homes, creating a humanitarian catastrophe. In the past 10 days alone, junta troops bombarded the town of Thantlang, prompting an exodus of nearly 8,000 people. Regime soldiers also shot down a Christian pastor in the town and mutilated his corpse

Recent days have seen a surge in killings of civilians—particularly members and vocal supporters of the ousted National League for Democracy (NLD), as well as villagers living in anti-regime resistance strongholds—by junta forces.

The fatalities reported over the past three days include Mandalay-based political activist and philanthropist Ko Than Htun Oo, a.k.a Ko Min Ko Thein, a member of NLD’s Mandalay branch. He died in police custody within a few hours of being arrested on Saturday.

Myanmar Military Targets Sagaing Villages With Airstrikes During Weekend Clashes

Myanmar’s military launched airstrikes on villages in northwestern Sagaing region as clashes with anti-junta joint forces intensified over the weekend, leaving at least 15 government troops dead and causing thousands of civilians to flee their homes to safety, sources said Monday.

Intense fighting broke out between junta forces and the Kachin Independence Army (KIA) armed ethnic organization (AEO) on Sunday in Pinlebu township, prompting the military to deploy heavy weapons and call in airstrikes to clear the area, a local branch of the People’s Defense Force (PDF) militia told RFA’s Myanmar Service.

Myanmar Junta Suffers Bloodiest Month with 1,562 Soldiers Killed:
Myanmar’s military regime has suffered its heaviest losses in a month since the Feb. 1 coup with over 1,500 soldiers killed as fighting mounts after the civilian National Unity Government (NUG) declared war on Sept 7.

NUG’s Ministry of Home Affairs and Immigration reported that 1,562 soldiers were killed and 552 wounded – more than double August’s death toll – in attacks by ethnic armed groups and civilian resistance fighters between Sept 7 and Oct 6.

The civilian ministry stated that 953 attacks were made on military and administrative targets and military-owned businesses.

Fresh clashes in northern Shan open old wounds and displace thousands
OCTOBER 7, 2021

An escalation in fighting between the Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army and the Tatmadaw near the town of Mong Ko on the China border has emptied villages, while inflaming longstanding tensions over who controls the area.

Image
The border town of Mong Ko in northern Shan State has seen regular conflict since the late 1960s, when it was first captured by the Communist Party of Burma.

When hundreds of displaced villagers began arriving in the northern Shan State town of Mong Ko in late August, cultural associations and religious groups joined together to coordinate a humanitarian response.

The villagers, who were fleeing fighting between the Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army and the Tatmadaw, sheltered in churches and monasteries, while host community members donated food, basic items and funds, and nurses from a church provided voluntary health care services.

Naypyidaw [Myanmar], October 8 (ANI): An official from the National League for Democracy (NLD) was shot dead by the Myanmar military in front of his wife and children after he tried to flee arrest from the junta.
Naing Linn was in hiding since the coup ousted the democratically elected government of NLD which was led by Aung San Suu Kyi, Radio Free Asia reported.

Two of them [Military men] came in undercover, pretending to be shoppers. After they learned he was home, a vehicle arrived with men wearing plain clothes... These men gestured like they were going to shoot him, so he ran away," said the committee member, who requested anonymity for security reasons.

"He didn't run very far. They started shooting and hit him in the leg. We heard them yelling, 'Are you going to run? Try running now!' Then we could hear them beating him. Finally, they shot him in the back of the head," the committee member was quoted as saying by Radio Free Asia.

Burma’s Humanitarian Emergency
The humanitarian crisis in Burma is now at a critical stage. The currency, the kyat, has crashed in the month of September to an all time low. The military coup that toppled the elected government is now waging a nationwide war on citizens. The military appointed State Administration Council has failed to tackle the covid-19 pandemic. Hospitals are understaffed as the military issues arrests for doctors, nurses and administrators who joined anit-coup demonstrations. The State Administration Councils arbitrary rules on banking - opening hours, overseas transfers and withdrawal procedures - are confused, leaving people unable to withdraw savings.

Progressive Voice, one of the groups who published the briefing paper, said despite the escalating civil war waging across the country, the Burma military has control of humanitarian aid.

Progressive Voice said not only is the military restricting and destroying aid destined for vulnerable communities, they are also using it as a weapon, especially in the six ethnic states ravaged by armed conflict.

The briefing paper said the situation on the ground has worsened as the military control over humanitarian aid and the tightening of aid provision procedures by international donors puts it out of reach for those most in need.

Resistance and demonstrations continue across the country

the junta is pretty much shunned by everyone BUT CHINA, ( yea, go figure)

Myanmar Military Regime Steps up Campaign of Terror
Myanmar’s junta has escalated its campaign against anti-coup opponents nationwide by stepping up its arrests, torture and killings, while ignoring calls from the international community to end all violence and release political prisoners.

On Monday alone, around 30 young people including teenagers were arrested in Yangon as junta forces raided several residential areas around the city.

Myanmar military shells town, destroys hundreds of homes
THANTLANG, Myanmar - On Friday, the Myanmar army blasted a restive western town, damaging hundreds of houses as part of a broader campaign on communities defying the military coup.

Thantlang, in western Chin State, was shelled after a clash with a local self-defense unit.

According to a local monitoring group, the Southeast Asian country has been in upheaval since a coup in February, with more than 1,200 people slain in a crackdown on the opposition

Thousands Flee Homes as Myanmar Junta Steps Up Attacks
Nearly 4,000 villagers in Pekon Township, southern Shan State, are fleeing their homes following fresh fighting between the junta and Karenni forces in Kayah and Shan states that left five soldiers dead.

The junta is continuously facing fierce attacks from People Defense Forces (PDFs) and some ethnic armed forces across the country, except in Rakhine State. Fighting in Kayah State has spilled across the border into Pekon in Shan State, where most of the villagers are ethnically Kayah.

Yaw resistance fighters threaten ‘serious action’ against anyone who continues to work for junta
The Yaw Defence Force has set a November 5 deadline for those working under the coup regime to quit

Image
Resistance fighters from the Yaw Defence Force (YDF) in upper Myanmar have warned civil servants working under the junta that they have until Friday to leave their jobs or will be targeted as supporters of the coup regime.

The group said it was prepared to “take action” against government workers in the Magway Region townships of Gangaw, Htilin, and Saw, where the YDF has a strong presence, especially in the villages.

“If they continue to work for the military council, they will be regarded as supporters of the military council. We will be taking serious action against anyone who continues to go to work after November 5,” the YDF’s leader, Yaw Lay, told Myanmar Now.

It is a good time as Aung San is not as popular now as she was pre 2017 concerning her not standing up for the Rohingya
That's a funny way to phrase committing genocide.

Thai Red Cross urges government to formalise humanitarian assistance to Myanmar

read the whole article but i noted this paragraph;
As Thailand is a frontline state, its participation in assistance is seen as vital to ASEAN as it is stuck with a 5-point consensus in which the Myanmar junta has failed to comply. But, as Thailand is also under control of a junta government, it has been criticised over its lack of engagement with Myanmar. Although the government’s stance on its current relationship with Myanmar is that of one who is trying to build trust with the ruling military, it has still failed to act in any significant way to aid the refugees.

UN says over 3 million in Myanmar need "life-saving" aid
The U.N. humanitarian chief is urging Myanmar’s military leaders to provide unimpeded access to the more than 3 million people in need of “life-saving" humanitarian assistance since government forces seized power on Feb. 1
UNITED NATIONS -- The U.N. humanitarian chief urged Myanmar’s military leaders on Monday to provide unimpeded access to the more than 3 million people in need of life-saving humanitarian assistance since government forces seized power on Feb. 1 “because of growing conflict and insecurity, COVID-19 and a failing economy.”

Martin Griffiths warned that without an end to violence and a peaceful resolution of Myanmar’s crisis, “this number will only rise.”

He also urged donors to respond to the U.N. appeal, saying less than half of the $385 million required has been raised since the military ousted the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi.

Governments, rights organisations and civil society groups have condemned the military for the destruction in Thantlang and have demanded it be held accountable.

More than 500 organisations, including Human Rights Watch, signed a statement last week calling on the United Nations Security Council to act urgently to “end [the] Myanmar junta’s campaign of terror.”

The United States said the incident “lays bare the regime’s complete disregard for the lives and welfare of the people of Burma,” and said the attacks “underscore the urgent need for the international community to hold the Burmese military accountable”.
