Well, Siddhārtha Gautama (The Buddha) was from India, so there you go... The best that most countries can boast of is some lousy king or queen, athlete, or celebrity, maybe a minor saint...
I quite enjoyed my time spent in India in '93 and '96. Yes, the cities are shitholes, so wise tourists avoid them. I have fond memories of Sikkim and Darjeeling, Varanasi, Bodhgaya, the desert in Rajasthan, the Island of Diu, the caves in Maharashtra, South Goa, and Kerala.
